Borussia Dortmund name former Bayern Munich boss as their new manager

Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have announced their new manager

Erik ten Hag had been linked with vacant role after being sacked by Man United

It’s All Kicking Off! Ruben Amorim’s comments are remarkable… but can we blame him?

Borussia Dortmund have officially unveiled former Bayern Munich boss Niko Kovac as the club’s new manager.

The club have been in search of a new head coach since Nuri Sahin was sacked last week following a dismal start to the campaign.

Sahin led the club to the Champions League final earlier this year but has struggled this season, with three consecutive league defeats leaving the club in the bottom half of the Bundesliga.

Youth coach Mike Tullberg took charge of the club’s draw with Werder Bremen on Saturday and their win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.

Erik ten Hag had been heavily linked with the role, with the former Manchester United boss understood to have held talks with the club.

However, Ten Hag’s desire to wait until the summer before returning to the dugout reportedly left him out of contention.

The 53-year-old previously managed rivals Bayern Munich, and was most recently in charge at fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg

Instead, Dortmund moved for Kovac, who played for several Bundesliga clubs before embarking on a career in management upon retiring from football in 2009.

A statement from the club revealed the 53-year-old has agreed a deal that will keep him at the Signal Iduna Park until June 2026.

After spells with the Croatian national team and Eintracht Frankfurt, Kovac became Bayern boss in the summer of 2018.

Kovac won a league and cup double in his first season with the Bavarian giants, before he was sacked following a poor start to his second campaign.

He then spent two years in Ligue 1 with Monaco, and led the Monegasque club to the final of the Coupe de France in his first season in charge.

Kovac was most recently in charge of fellow Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg before he was sacked by the club in March 2024.

Despite victory on Wednesday seeing the club qualify for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs next month, Dortmund are 11th in the Bundesliga, five points adrift of the European places.

  • Mikel Arteta ‘prefers’ two stars he wants Arsenal to sign ahead of Ollie Watkins

Mikel Arteta ‘prefers’ two stars he wants Arsenal to sign ahead of Ollie Watkins

Mikel Arteta ‘prefers’ two stars he wants Arsenal to sign ahead of Ollie Watkins

Arsenal had to go down their transfer pecking order before deciding to launch a bid for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins according to former Gunners midfielder Emmanuel Petit

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta would have preferred to sign two players over Ollie Watkins, according to former Gunners star Emmanuel Petit.

It emerged earlier this week than the north London side had made a move to sign Aston Villa forward Watkins, amid their desire for a new forward. Petit believes the move for the former Brentford and Exeter ace is one of ‘panic’.

Watkins has scored 10 goals already this term, in addition to providing five assists. Last term, the 28-year-old netted 19 goals and provided 13 assists.

Petit believes that the England international could prove a useful signing for Arteta. The Frenchman reckons Watkins would strengthen Arsenal’s forward line but that he was not their first choice.

Instead, Petit believes the Gunners’ preference will have been Newcastle forward Alexander Isak or Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who is on loan at Galatasaray.

“The potential signing of Ollie Watkins to Arsenal feels like a bit of a panic buy,” Petit told Metro. “He wasn’t the first-choice target, but with the January transfer window nearing its end, Arsenal have had to act.

“I’m fairly certain Arsenal would have preferred a different striker. That being said, I do like Watkins as a player. He is highly competitive, has a strong desire to score goals and provide assists, and brings real energy to the attack. He would add a physical presence to Arsenal’s forward line, and with his pace, he offers something different.

“However, there would have been a few names ahead of Ollie Watkins that Arsenal wanted. Alexander Isak possesses everything Arsenal would want and need in an out-and-out striker.

“I think Victor Osimhen would also have been on the list, but perhaps his personality and character could have been a problem going forward for Arsenal.”

Any attempt by Arsenal to sign Watkins could yet prove more difficult. Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran is close to completing a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, which would appear to make a transfer for Watkins less likely to be sanctioned.

The clubs are said to have agreed a fee, with Duran reported to have said his goodbyes to Villa staff on Wednesday night. Duran could fly to Saudi Arabia this weekend.

Unai Emery said of a deal: “If he is leaving it’s because he wants [to]. I told you last week I wanted him here. We are different people, different objectives. The club is working and we have to be intelligent in the market.”

Chloe Kelly is set to sign for Arsenal on loan from Manchester City

The winger had appeared set to make a switch to Manchester United

LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! Ollie Watkins to Arsenal? It’s terrible planning from Arsenal… it’s all a bit late and panicked from the Gunners!

Chloe Kelly’s short-term future looks finally to have cleared up with the England midfielder set to join Arsenal on loan until the rest of the season.

The 27-year-old’s contract at Manchester City was due to expire in June, and she looked set for a move across town to Manchester United due to location preferences.

But it now appears the north London club is where she will spend the rest of the season, with City accepting a bid from Arsenal just hours before the deadline closes.

Mail Sport understands City had only received one suitable bid for Kelly before the statement and that had been with her to consider ahead of the window closing.

The move comes after the City winger – who has started just once in the WSL this season – issued a statement saying that her situation was affecting her ‘mental wellbeing’ as she bids for more regular playing time ahead of this summer’s Euros.

Posting on Instagram late on Wednesday night, Kelly wrote: ‘With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country.

‘However, to be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.

‘The situation has been dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right.’

Arsenal are currently fourth in the WSL table, one point behind City, and Kelly will give them a positive boost as the Gunners attempt to wrangle a top-three Champions League spot.

Wexler-NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images

The New York Jets are at a critical turning point in their franchise’s history.

After a dismal 5-12 season, the Jets brought in a new head coach (Aaron Glenn) and general manager (Darren Mougey) in tandem. The two will be tasked with reshaping the roster, creating a winning culture, and pulling the team out of the longest active playoff drought in the NFL.

Further complicating the situation is 40-year-old starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who hasn’t yet determined if he wishes to play this season for the Jets, for another team, or not at all. What Rodgers decides, and whether the Jets wish to retain him anyway, has major ramifications for the direction of the franchise.

Say the Jets want to move on completely from Rodgers, though, and select a quarterback at the top of the NFL Draft. Because they have the seventh pick, they’d have to trade up, and the most logical way to control the outcome is to land the number-one pick, which is owned by the Tennessee Titans

In a Wednesday article, Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon predicted what the Jets would have to surrender to land the Titans’ number-one pick: the number-seven pick in this year’s draft, the Jets’ 2026 first-round pick, plus their 2025 second-round pick

“(The Jets) pick seventh and might be fired up to replace Aaron Rodgers, if indeed that experiment ends between now and draft day,” Gagnon wrote.

“If so, we’re of course again looking at next year’s first as well as immediate Day 2 draft capital. And in this case, that’d potentially have to outweigh what the Raiders have on the table, as New York would be moving up from seven instead of six.”

That’s a lot to give up in any draft class, but this year in particular, it’s an iffy proposition. A quarterback isn’t a lock to go number one at all, and regardless of whether Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders is considered the best QB in this class, most believe next year’s signal-callers have more promise.

The Jets would be justified to exercise some caution and not sell the farm for the rights to Ward or Sanders. But one never knows how a front office might evaluate college quarterbacks, so maybe Mougey has already begun plotting.

Aston Villa have reportedly initiated discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over the possible signing of attacking midfielder Marco Asensio.

The 38-time former Spain international has been a peripheral figure at PSG this season, accumulating just 755 minutes across Ligue 1 and the Champions League. The Parisiens’ head coach, Luis Enrique, has preferred the likes of Kang-in Lee, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembele and Destiny Doue in the starting lineup.

Asensio has also won the Ligue 1 title once, as well as three domestic French cup competitions with PSG and a further three Spanish cup trophies with Madrid. Such experience could really benefit Villa as they aim to progress through the last 16 of the Champions League into the quarter-finals and beyond.

Aston Villa receive huge cash injection

Emery will soon welcome a healthy boost to his transfer kitty with Jhon Duran set to complete a stunning €77 million (£64.5m) transfer to Al-Nassr. Duran, who has agreed terms on a five-and-a-half year deal, will join up with Cristiano Ronaldo at the Saudi Pro League club.

“The club is working, we have to be intelligent and competitive,” Emery added. “Of course we are developing players and increasing our objective, increasing our target – getting it playing in the Champions League. “We are in the eyes for other strong teams and other strong countries or leagues like in Arabia. It’s something I can feel proud of, because they are improving and we are having players interesting for other clubs and as well paying good money for us.

“He’s a fantastic player with fantastic potential as a young player. I was always trying to give my advice for everything, I was so close with him in his development. But the players as well have their objectives and their ambitions, in case he’s leaving it’s because he prefers to do another way in his career.”

When asked about the Duran situation on Wednesday night, Emery admitted: “I don’t know exactly until everything is done if Jhon Duran is leaving or not, but if he is leaving, it’s good news for us because they are paying good money.

“It’s good for him, we developed one good player in two years getting this offer. This is one thing for the club, the player and the team. Those three circumstances can be positive.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist Gabby Thomas pleaded for advice on TikTok after expressing concern she was being stalked by a group of men at airports in America.

Thomas described how “three to six” middle-aged men appeared to be waiting for her in various US airports including Chicago and Miami, even sometimes showing up at her departure gate.

The 200m world and Olympic champion detailed how the men regularly appeared, asking her to sign pictures of herself, and that she was most disturbed by the fact they appeared to know her flight information.

In her video on TikTok, Thomas said she had changed her email passwords and does not tell anyone her flight details.

“At this point, every time I travel, I’m afraid that these men, are going to show up and harass me,” said Thomas.

“They have my flight information. And they show up at the front door of the airport at the correct concourse or they show up at my gate, which means they have flight tickets and they get past security and all that.

Thomas with her gold medal for winning the 200m Olympics final in Paris last summer

“They show up and they ask me to sign a bunch of these photos and pictures of me, like 40 of them. I don’t know what they’re doing with them, probably selling them, I don’t care. What scares me is that they have my flight information.

“I don’t even know what time I’m flying out sometimes. I don’t tell anyone my flight information. I’ve changed all my email passwords. I don’t know if they’re hacking me. But they get really aggressive and hostile if I say ‘no’.

“When I’m by myself, it’s really scary. They got really hostile with my boyfriend yesterday. It’s not even airline-specific but I don’t know how they’re getting my flight information. And it’s really starting to freak me out.

“And honestly, I don’t know who to go to about this. Do I go to the police? Do I go to airport security?”

Coco Gauff said she had her own experiences of being followed at airports

Fellow American sporting star Ilona Maher, who plays for the Bristol Bears in Premiership Women’s Rugby, showed her support in response on the social media platform, while Grand Slam tennis champion Coco Gauff admitted she too had experiences of similar instances.

“This happens to me too, I don’t know how it happens, my theory is maybe someone at the airport tips them off,” Gauff said.

Thomas concluded her appeal for advice by stating: “I don’t get why people can’t respect privacy? I really don’t get it. I don’t like feeling unsafe when travelling. I don’t know what to do, any advice is welcome.”

Arsenal charged by FA for Michael Oliver incident after red card overturn

Arsenal have been charged by the Football Association for the aftermath of Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card against Wolves.

Lewis-Skelly was sent off controversially, fouling Matt Doherty around 90 yards from goal before surprisingly being shown a straight red card.

Fortunately for Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly’s red card was overturned amid a mass of complaints from fans and the footballing world, a decision not everyone agreed with.

Arsenal players surround referee Michael Oliver after sending Myles Lewis-Skelly of Arsenal off during the Premier League match between Wolverhampt…

Arsenal charged by the FA following Myles Lewis-Skelly red card

While the Gunners won their appeal to overturn the defender’s wrongful dismissal, Arsenal are not in the clear just yet.

It’s been announced that Arsenal have received an FA charge for players surrounding referee Oliver after Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off.

“Arsenal FC has been charged after its players surrounded a match official during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC on Saturday, 25 January.

“The club allegedly failed to ensure that its players did not behave in an improper manner around the 43rd minute. Arsenal FC has until Monday, 3 February, to provide a response.”

There was a wave of attention generated from Lewis-Skelly’s wrongful dismissal, including PGMOL having to release a statement in protection of Oliver.

While the card was overturned and Lewis-Skelly’s suspension has been lifted, the Gunners are set for punishment by the FA if they do not decide to appeal the latest charge.

How FA charges work as Arsenal await punishment

Arsenal have until Monday, transfer deadline day, to respond to the FA’s charge, but how do things work?

A lot happens behind the scenes when the FA charge a club or a player for an incident, stemming from a report filed by the match officials involved in the fixture.

The FA then study the incident to determine if a charge is sanctionable, deciding whether rules were broken or not – in this case, Arsenal are determined to have overstepped a line.

Arsenal have the chance to appeal, like they did Lewis-Skelly’s red, giving the Gunners the opportunity to present evidence to determine otherwise.

A commission will then evaluate any evidence against the charge provided and decide on a punishment, which in this case, is likely to be a fine.

The red card has unleashed so much controversy for Arsenal and the Premier League, with Arteta surely looking forward to putting the incident to bed once and for all.

Tight end Peyton Hendershot and linebacker Cam Jones have a shot at getting their own Super Bowl rings.

Nov 17, 2024; Orchard Park, New York, USA; Kansas City Chiefs tight end Peyton Hendershot (88) on the field in the first quarter against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium.

Football season as a whole is almost over as the college games are officially over, and there is just one game left in the NFL, the Super Bowl. The stage is set for the Kansas City Chiefs to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, which just so happens to be a rematch of Super Bowl 27, which the Chiefs prevailed in.

After that Super Bowl 57 win, former Indiana linebacker Cam Jones joined the reigning champs as he signed with the Chiefs after the 2023 NFL Draft as an undrafted free agent. Jones has been with the Chiefs ever since and even received a Super Bowl ring last season when the Chiefs won their second straight Super Bowl, that one coming against the San Fransisco 49ers.

Jones saw the field more than he probably expected to last season due to injuries in the linebacker room, and that was the reason he got his Super Bowl ring. Jones appeared in 17 games for the Chiefs last season and in 17 games this season as well.

The other former Hoosier who will get his first shot at getting a Super Bowl ring is tight end Peyton Hendershot, who joined the Chiefs in the offseason after two years with the Dallas Cowboys. Hendershot has been in the mix with a great tight end group in Kansas City led by future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce. The Chiefs used a lot of tight ends this season, especially when their wide receiver core ran thin. Hendershot has five catches fro 51 yards this season.

Hendershot played at Indiana from 2017 to 2021 and left the Hoosiers as the all-time leader in receptions with 136 and receiving yards with 1,479 for tight ends. He also was not taken in the NFL Draft and signed with the Cowboys before landing in Kansas City.

Jones was with the Hoosiers from 2018 to 2022 as a three-time captain in his five seasons at Indiana. He totaled 208 tackles and 13.5 tackles for a loss as Hoosier. The Indiana Hoosiers may not have a lot of representation in the Super Bowl, but having two former players is enough.

The Super Bowl is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. EST in Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

New Ipswich Town signing Julio Enciso says he wants to help the Blues ‘play great football’ and stay in the Premier League.

The young Paraguayan forward, 21, became Town’s third signing of the window last week when he arrived from Premier League rivals Brighton on loan for the rest of the campaign.

Reports suggested that the exciting youngster picked Town over a host of clubs, including slumbering giants Manchester United.

While that has not been confirmed, Enciso did reveal that conversations with boss Kieran McKenna were key to the move.

“I really can’t wait to get started.”

Enciso duly got started at Anfield on Saturday, first clattering into Wataru Endo after coming on as sub, before delivering the corner from which Jacob Greaves snatched a late consolation goal in the 4-1 defeat.

Asked what fans can expect of him as a player, he enthused: “I like to carry the ball, I like dribbling.

“Hopefully I can help and learn from all my team-mates.”

Asked for a message to Town fans, he replied: “Keep on supporting. Of course I am happy to be here. I will give my best on the pitch.”
