Right-back Clarke, an important player in the back-to-back promotion campaigns, was due to make a £3.5m switch to Championship club Stoke City. However, the move now looks like it may now be off following an issue highlighted at the medical stage.

Striker Ali Al-Hamadi, meanwhile, has also seen the plug pulled on a loan switch to Polish club Raków Częstochowa after also reaching the medical stage. According to Weszlo, it’s due to concerns about a cardiac issue.

“Ali’s back in training with us,” said O’Neil. “It’s an unfortunate one for him because I know it was something he was keen to do.

“I’ve spoken to him a lot. He’s a great kid. I want to help him as much as I can.

“It’s unfortunate that the move didn’t quite progress for him, but I’m sure there’ll be interest elsewhere. If not, we take him back in our group and we help him here.”

He continued: “Obviously Harry Clarke wasn’t with us today. The same with him.

“We’re going to support him and get him ready to play.

“This is what football’s like. Like with Wes Burns went the other day (moving to Leicester), that wasn’t expected really and came out the blue. So things can change quickly.

“But while they’re here, they get our full support.

“Harry trained this morning. He’s an excellent professional and ha worked unbelievably hard since I’ve been here.

“Let’s see what happens over the next few weeks. We’ve got lots of players. I’m sure there will be some outs. And I’m sure there’ll be some ins.”
