Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer may still be evaluating who will lead the Crimson Tide offense at quarterback this season, but one thing appears increasingly certain: the team’s biggest source of stability could be at center. As the battle between Austin Mack and Keelon Russell continues, DeBoer believes transfer center Racin Delgatty has already become a crucial piece in helping the offense function smoothly.
Last season, Alabama enjoyed the leadership and experience of Parker Brailsford, one of the nation’s top centers. His ability to identify defensive fronts, organize protection calls, and communicate with the offensive line gave the coaching staff confidence that the offense would remain organized regardless of who was taking snaps. Brailsford’s presence allowed DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to focus on developing the quarterback position without worrying about communication issues up front.
When Brailsford departed for the NFL after being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 2026 NFL Draft, Alabama faced a major challenge. Replacing an experienced center is never easy, especially in the highly competitive SEC, where defensive schemes constantly test offensive communication.
Rather than relying on an inexperienced player, DeBoer turned to the transfer portal and landed former Cal Poly standout Racin Delgatty. The Second Team All-Big Sky selection arrived in Tuscaloosa with more than 1,300 career snaps and an impressive record of allowing just one sack throughout his college career.
Those numbers alone suggested Delgatty could compete immediately, but his impact has extended beyond pass protection. According to DeBoer, Delgatty’s experience has helped him quickly adjust to Alabama’s offensive system and the demanding responsibilities that come with playing center.
Speaking about his new lineman, DeBoer praised Delgatty’s composure and football intelligence. He explained that playing center requires much more than blocking defenders. The position demands constant communication before every snap, identifying defensive alignments, directing teammates into the correct positions, and making adjustments in real time.
DeBoer noted that Delgatty’s extensive experience has prevented him from becoming overwhelmed by those responsibilities. While adjusting to SEC competition remains a challenge, he believes the transfer has already shown the confidence needed to succeed at the highest level of college football.
The head coach also emphasized that fall camp will be critical for Delgatty’s continued development. Facing Alabama’s talented defensive line every day in practice will prepare him for the physical battles awaiting during conference play. As he becomes more comfortable within the offense, his confidence should continue to grow.
That growth could prove especially valuable for whichever quarterback wins the starting job. Young quarterbacks often benefit from having an experienced center who can handle protection calls and pre-snap adjustments. With Delgatty managing much of the communication at the line of scrimmage, Mack or Russell can concentrate on reading defenses, making accurate throws, and leading the offense.
As Alabama prepares for another season with championship aspirations, every small advantage matters. While fans naturally focus on the quarterback competition, DeBoer’s comments suggest the real difference-maker could be the veteran center standing directly in front of the eventual starter.
If Delgatty continues his impressive transition into SEC football, Alabama’s offense will enter the season with greater stability, improved communication, and a stronger foundation. In a closely contested quarterback battle, that steady presence could ultimately help determine not only who wins the starting job, but also how successful the Crimson Tide become in 2026.
