Gout Gout officially recognised as Under-20 200m world record holder by World Athletics

Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has received official recognition from World Athletics as the men’s Under-20 200 metres world record holder, marking another remarkable milestone in the teenager’s rapidly growing career.

The 18-year-old stunned the athletics world when he clocked an incredible 19.67 seconds in the 200m at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney in April. The performance not only shattered his previous personal best and Australian record, but also eclipsed the previous world Under-20 record of 19.69 seconds set by Erriyon Knighton in 2022.

At the time, the performance was celebrated across the sport, but official ratification from World Athletics was still required before it could be entered into the record books. That confirmation has now arrived, with World Athletics announcing that Gout’s achievement has been formally ratified as the new world Under-20 record. The governing body included Gout among a group of athletes whose records were recently approved following the standard verification process.

The recognition further cements Gout’s status as one of the most exciting young athletes in global track and field. His 19.67-second run was historic for several reasons. Not only did it make him the fastest Under-20 athlete ever over the distance under ratified conditions, but it also made him the first Australian man to legally break the 20-second barrier in the 200m.

The Queensland-born sprinter has attracted worldwide attention over the past two years due to his exceptional speed and smooth running style. Comparisons with sprint legend Usain Bolt have become common, particularly after Gout’s latest performances placed him ahead of Bolt’s best teenage times. His 19.67 effort moved him above Bolt on the world Under-20 all-time rankings and established him as one of the fastest teenagers the sport has ever seen.

Gout’s rise has been rapid. After claiming silver in the 200m at the 2024 World Under-20 Championships, he continued to improve throughout 2025 before producing his breakthrough performance in Sydney this year. The record run immediately sparked excitement among athletics fans and experts, many of whom believe he has the potential to become a future global champion.

Despite the growing hype surrounding him, Gout has remained focused on development and competition. He is expected to be one of the headline attractions at the upcoming World Under-20 Championships in Oregon, where he will aim to add international gold to his growing collection of achievements. Australia has already named him in its squad for both the 200m and 4x400m relay events.

With official world-record status now secured, Gout Gout’s name is permanently etched into athletics history. For a teenager still at the beginning of his career, the achievement represents both a reward for years of hard work and a sign of even greater things to come. As the athletics world looks ahead to the next generation of sprint stars, Gout has firmly established himself as one of its brightest talents.
