The Detroit Lions have built one of the most respected offensive lines in the NFL over the past few seasons, and maintaining that strength will be a top priority heading into the 2026 campaign. With offseason speculation swirling around possible lineup tweaks, one of the most intriguing questions concerns whether star right tackle Penei Sewell could make a switch to the left side of the line.
For several years, Sewell has been the cornerstone of the Lions’ offensive line at right tackle. Since being drafted seventh overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, the powerful and athletic lineman has developed into one of the league’s premier blockers. His combination of strength, quick feet, and football intelligence has made him a dominant presence protecting the edge for quarterback Jared Goff and opening lanes in the running game.
However, with potential changes to the Lions’ roster this offseason, the idea of Sewell moving to left tackle has gained traction. Traditionally, the left tackle position is considered the most important spot on the offensive line because it protects the quarterback’s blind side. If the Lions were to shift Sewell to that role, it could solidify the position for years to come.
Currently, veteran Taylor Decker has been the team’s starting left tackle. Decker has been a reliable presence since being selected in the first round of the 2016 draft and has served as one of the leaders of the offensive line unit. His experience and consistency have helped stabilize the line during the Lions’ rise under head coach Dan Campbell.
Despite Decker’s importance to the team, age and long-term planning may eventually force Detroit to consider a transition. Moving Sewell to left tackle could allow the Lions to prepare for the future while still keeping one of the league’s elite linemen protecting Goff. Sewell played left tackle in college at Oregon Ducks football, meaning the switch would not be entirely unfamiliar.
If Sewell were to move to the left side, the Lions would then need to determine who would take over at right tackle. Detroit has several potential depth options, though none currently match Sewell’s elite level of play. The coaching staff could look toward a younger lineman already on the roster or address the position through the draft or free agency.
Beyond the tackle spots, Detroit’s interior offensive line remains one of the strongest groups in the NFL. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow anchors the unit and has long been regarded as the emotional leader of the offense. His toughness and ability to read defenses make him one of the best centers in the league.
At guard, Graham Glasgow and Jonah Jackson have provided dependable play in recent seasons. Their chemistry with Ragnow has helped Detroit dominate at the line of scrimmage, particularly in the running game where the Lions have consistently ranked among the league’s most physical teams.
Ultimately, whether Sewell moves to left tackle may depend on the Lions’ long-term roster strategy. If the organization believes Decker can continue performing at a high level, they may prefer to keep Sewell on the right side where he has already established himself as an All-Pro caliber player. Stability along the offensive line is often crucial, and unnecessary changes can sometimes disrupt well-established chemistry.
Still, the possibility of Sewell protecting the blind side is an enticing one for Detroit. With his rare talent and versatility, he could thrive at either tackle position. As the Lions evaluate their depth chart heading into the new season, the decision surrounding Sewell could shape the future of one of the NFL’s most dominant offensive lines.
