Ipswich Town: AFC Wrexham register interest in Sammie Szmodics

AFC Wrexham are the latest team to have registered their interest in Ipswich Town forward Sammie Szmodics ahead of Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline.

The EADT and Ipswich Star revealed yesterday that the Blues had rejected a bid from Derby County for the 30-year-old.

Now, as reported by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, fellow Championship club Wrexham have made their interest in the player known.

It’s understood that the Blues would be open to selling a player who endured an injury-hit 2025, but that they are not willing to take a huge hit on the £9m paid to Blackburn just 18 months ago.

Wrexham, gunning for a third straight promotion, are currently sixth in the table. Derby, managed by Szmodics’ former Blackburn boss John Eustace, currently sit two points outside the play-offs.

Szmodics, contracted until 2028, has scored one goal in eight starts and 10 substitute appearances this season. When everyone’s fit, he has Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke ahead of him for the left wing role and faces competition from Marcelino Nunez and new signing Anis Mehmeti for the No.10 spot.

Negotiations over a potential departure are now likely to drag into deadline day. It remains to be seen if he is involved in Town’s home game against Preston North End on Saturday.
