Ex-Premier League goal getter says Ipswich don’t need to sign a striker this month

Ipswich Town have George Hirst, Ivan Azon and Chuba Akpom as striker options.

Former Premier League hit shot Kevin Phillips doesn’t believe Ipswich Town need to sign a striker before the January transfer window shuts.

The Blues climbed back up to second in the Championship table last night with a 2-0 home win against Bristol City.

There have been no new faces through the door yet this month, with many suggesting that an upgrade is required in the forward department if Kieran McKenna’s men are to get promotion over the line.

George Hirst (six goals), Chuba Akpom (two) and Ivan Azon (two) are the current three options up top, the latter receiving plenty of praise for his performance last night. Ipswich are the second top scorers in the division.

Asked whether he felt Ipswich needed to sign a front man over the coming days, former Sunderland star and England international Kevin Phillips told bestbettingsites.co.uk: “It’s a difficult one because Ipswich are on a good run at the moment. A lot of people are tipping them to overtake Coventry, win the league and get promoted to the Premier League again.

“Only time will tell whether that happens, but they’re in an unbelievable position. With the squad they have got, everything’s really good at the minute, confidence is high, morale’s good and so is team spirit. When you dip into the transfer market and bring a player in, it can sometimes upset that.

“Yes, it could improve the side and make them even stronger, but do they really need to go and get a striker? Akpom, we know, can score at that level. Yes, he’s only got two goals, Hirst six, Azon two, but they’ve got (Jaden) Philogene and (Jack) Clarke, who are two players that are scoring nearly every game between them. So they’ve certainly got players in the squad that can score goals.

“It’s just about whether they really want to take it to that next level and bring a player in now that, if they were to get promoted, can go to play in the Premier League. That’s going to cost money and quite a few quid.

“I think they’re going to be finishing the top two, in my opinion. Personally, at the minute, I think they’re okay.”
