Ipswich Town: Ex-Blue Will Keane joins Reading on loan from Preston

Former Ipswich Town forward Will Keane has completed a loan move to Reading from Preston North End, offering the Royals a timely attacking boost while adding another chapter to a career that has seen him operate across the Championship and League One. For Ipswich supporters, the move also brings back memories of Keane’s brief but intriguing spell at Portman Road.

Keane, 32, links up with Reading for the remainder of the season as the Berkshire club look to strengthen their forward line during a crucial period of their campaign. With goals at a premium and consistency hard to come by, Reading have turned to an experienced striker who knows the demands of the EFL inside out. Preston, meanwhile, have sanctioned the temporary departure in order to ensure Keane gets regular minutes after falling down the pecking order at Deepdale.

The Manchester United academy graduate joined Ipswich Town on loan during the 2018–19 season, arriving with a strong reputation but also a sense of unfinished business following injury setbacks earlier in his career. While his time with the Blues did not produce the goal return many had hoped for, Keane’s work rate, intelligence off the ball and professionalism were consistently praised by coaches and teammates.

At Ipswich, Keane often operated as a linking forward rather than an out-and-out goalscorer, a role that sometimes went underappreciated in a side struggling for form during that period. Despite limited opportunities to truly settle, he remained a popular figure behind the scenes and left the club with his reputation intact, if not fully fulfilled.

Since then, Keane has enjoyed a more stable spell at Preston North End, where he played a key role in their promotion push from League One and later proved a reliable option in the Championship. His experience, leadership and ability to bring others into play have made him a valuable squad member, even if his starts have been more sporadic this season.

For Reading, the loan signing represents both a short-term solution and a calculated gamble. Keane offers Championship-level experience, tactical awareness and a calm presence in the final third — qualities that can be vital for a side navigating pressure on and off the pitch. While he may not arrive with the profile of a prolific scorer, his ability to knit attacks together and occupy defenders could prove just as important.

From Ipswich Town’s perspective, Keane’s move is another reminder of how careers can evolve after Portman Road. Under Kieran McKenna, the Blues now boast a clearly defined attacking identity built on energy, pressing and fluid movement — traits that arguably suit Keane’s skillset more than the Ipswich side he once played in.

As Reading look to climb the table and Preston manage their squad depth, the loan move appears to suit all parties. For Keane, it is an opportunity to rediscover momentum, contribute regularly and remind the league of his quality.

Ipswich fans will watch with mild interest, knowing that while his time in Suffolk was short-lived, Will Keane remains one of many former Blues determined to make their mark elsewhere in the Football League.
