Lions set OC interview with coach who once worked with Jared Gof

Someone both Brad Holmes and Jared Goff know well is now a candidate for the Detroit Lions’ next offensive coordinator.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson will interview in Detroit for the Lions’ open position on Thursday. He is the fifth candidate for the job, which opened after the Lions fired John Morton following one season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also looking at Robinson for their offensive coordinator opening.

Robinson, 39, was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator for the last two seasons, with mixed results as the main play-caller. In 2024, his first year, Atlanta ranked 13th in scoring, averaging 22.9 points per game. Last season, they averaged 20.8 points, ranking 20th.

While Robinson was in charge, Falcons running back Bijan Robinson made two Pro Bowls and earned First-team All-Pro honors this past season, finishing with 2,298 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns.

Robinson started coaching in 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams as the assistant quarterbacks coach under Sean McVay. At that time, Brad Holmes was the Rams’ director of college scouting, and Jared Goff was the team’s quarterback.

Robinson later worked as the wide receivers coach, pass game coordinator, and quarterbacks coach, though he only took on the quarterbacks coach role after Holmes and Goff had left, as part of McVay’s Super Bowl LVI-winning staff.

Early in their search, the Lions contacted former quarterback and Washington Commanders assistant David Blough. The Commanders promoted him to offensive coordinator about 48 hours after the Lions showed interest.

Detroit also interviewed former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, Seattle Seahawks pass game coordinator Jake Peetz, and Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Tee Martin.
