ITFC – Ipswich Town’s Jacob Greaves walks off the pitch after being sent off.
Ipswich Town defender Jacob Greaves’ performance at left-back against the league leaders provides another option that Kieran McKenna could use this season.
Ipswich Town have hit some great form lately and look like real challengers for promotion. The Tractor Boys sit 3rd in the table and are just two points off the automatic places.
Kieran McKenna’s side had a slow start to the campaign but have taken advantage of the busy festive period to pick up some crucial points. Monday night saw ITFC deliver arguably their best performance of the season as they defeated league leaders Coventry City 2-0.
ITFC – Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna gestures to the fans after the match
The Tractor Boys were without Leif Davis for the clash, and he was replaced by Jacob Greaves at left-back. The 25-year-old delivered potentially his best game for the club yet and has given McKenna food for thought about team selection moving forward.
Greaves signed for Ipswich Town for £18m from Hull City in 2024 after they were promoted to the Premier League. The central defender has struggled to play his best football at Portman Road since joining, but his performance on Monday could be the resurgence he needed.
Will Jacob Greaves be Ipswich Town’s new left-back?
Greaves proved he could be a viable option at left-back for Ipswich Town after the victory against Coventry City. With Davis out, there was more freedom for Jack Clarke on the wing, which resulted in a goal for the attacker.
McKenna will likely still opt for Davis at left-back. When coming up against teams that like to dominate on either flank, though, Greaves could be the best option. The 25-year-old limited Tatsuhiro Sakamoto to few chances on the night.

According to Fotmob, the former Hull City man made 10 defensive contributions against the Sky Blues, and his performance capped off a dominating defensive display for ITFC.
Jacob Greaves could replicate Tyrone Mings’s success
Tyrone Mings excelled at Ipswich Town over his three-year spell at Portman Road. The 32-year-old quickly earned himself a move to the Premier League, where he has remained ever since.

Greaves is of a similar stature to the Aston Villa defender, who was a huge success at left-back despite his unusual height for the position. The 25-year-old isn’t a stranger to playing on the left side of defence, but he could want to stay there if he consistently performs better.
The ITFC defender appeared 30 times at left-back for Hull City and scored four goals, while providing 3 assists. His record playing in that area of the pitch could indicate that is how McKenna can maximise his talent moving forward.
