McKenna’s a fan: Ipswich now making moves to sign “electric” £50m forward

Ipswich Town are now making moves to sign an “electric” £50m forward, and they are looking to get a deal done in the January transfer window.

Ipswich looking to boost promotion chances with statement signing

Ipswich are now starting to put the pressure on second-placed Middlesbrough, moving within just five points of their Championship rivals courtesy of a 3-1 victory against Sheffield Wednesday at Portman Road on Saturday.

As we approach the half-way stage of the campaign, the Tractor Boys are in a strong position to challenge for promotion, having been particularly impressive on the front foot, scoring 38 Championship goals, the second-highest number of any side.

Jaden Philogene and Jack Clarke have scored 15 of those, which shows Kieran McKenna is already blessed with some top-quality options out wide, but signing another winger is on the to-do list in the January transfer window, and an ambitious target has now been identified.

That is according to a report from Football Insider, which states Ipswich are now making moves to sign Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson, with the Premier League side considering sanctioning a winter departure.

There could be competition for Johnson’s signature, however, as Crystal Palace have already registered their interest in the winger, while Brentford have also joined the race, and a permanent deal is likely to be on the expensive side.

Indeed, recent reports have stated the north Londoners could hold out for a fee of £50m, which would evidently be a huge amount for a Championship club to pay, and the Tractor Boys are interested in a January loan deal instead.

Signing “electric” Johnson would be major coup for Ipswich

It would be a real coup if Ipswich were able to sign the Welshman, considering he has proven he is more than good enough to play for a club in Europe, most famously scoring the winner in the Europa League final against Manchester United last season.

Not only that, but the 24-year-old also flourished in the Premier League during the 2024-25 campaign, chipping in with a very respectable 11 goals and five assists in 33 outings.

McKenna has already admitted he is a fan of the Tottenham ace, saying last season: “He’s certainly having a big impact on the Tottenham side at the moment with his directness off the ball, his movement to get behind, his ability to create chances, and his movement to score opportunities. He’s very, very good.”

The compliments don’t stop there either, with the Athletic’s Paul Taylor lauding the former Nottingham Forest man as “electric”.
