Leicester City manager Marti Cifuentes refused to expand on the reasons behind Harry Winks’ absence after the midfielder missed the 3-1 win at Derby.

It was the first time all season that Winks had not been in the City squad, the England midfielder starting the previous 13 Championship matches.

Cifuentes had said before the game that Winks’ omission was because of a “technical decision”, and asked to clarify what that meant, the manager said: “I just said it’s a technical decision. I want to focus on the players who were on the pitch today who did an excellent job.”

When pushed and asked if he was on good terms with Winks, Cifuentes merely said: “Technical decision.”

The Telegraph have reported that Winks was left out after issues in training this week and during preparation for the Sheffield United fixture.

Winks had been substituted at half-time in that loss to the Blades, with Boubakary Soumare taking his place.

Skipp’s finish was the second of three goals in a brilliant first half from City, one that powered them to their first victory in three and sent them above Derby and into the top half.

With Winks absent and Soumare injured, Hamza Choudhury, usually a right-back for Cifuentes, will provide cover to Skipp at the base of midfield.
