The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games will feature a groundbreaking schedule, with the athletics competition running for the entire duration of the event for the first time in history.

According to World Athletics, the action will kick off with the women’s 100m on the very first day of competition. According to the schedule published, athletics will begin with a bang on Saturday, July 15, 2028.

In a historic move, all three rounds of the women’s 100m, including the final, will be held on the opening day, ensuring one of the most electrifying events in sports launches the Games.

The schedule has been designed to maximise opportunities for athletes to compete in multiple events.

Potential doubles include the 100m & 200m, 800m and 1500m, and 5000m and 10,000m, opening the door for stars to emulate the legendary feats of past Olympians like Carl Lewis at the LA 1984 Games.

A new repechage format will be introduced to give athletes more recovery time, and the mixed 4x100m relay will make its Olympic debut.

While the event allocation for each session is now set, World Athletics and the LA28 Organising Committee will finalise the detailed timetable over the next two and a half years. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praised the innovative schedule.

“It is in the spirit of collaboration… that we have landed on an athletics programme that will start with a bang,” he said.

“It is a schedule that is both innovative but also honours tradition, with the men’s marathon on the final day.”

Top athletes have also expressed their excitement. World and Olympic champion Sha’Carri Richardson said, “Track and field is having its moment, and the road to LA28 is about to be something special, especially for the women’s sprints… I’m locked in on accomplishing some personal goals and doing my part to help the sport keep growing.”

British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith added, “It will be an honour for the women’s 100m to open the LA Games. It’s such an exciting opportunity, celebrating the enduring legacy, strength and global power of women’s sprinting, exactly 100 years on from the first time women competed in Olympic Track and Field.”
