Kirby Smart Gives Georgia Football Injury Updates on Roderick Robinson, Dwight Phillips

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart delivered an encouraging set of updates for fans this week, particularly regarding running backs Roderick Robinson and Dwight Phillips, as well as key offensive linemen Earnest Greene and Juan Gaston. With the third-ranked Bulldogs preparing to host No. 14 Alabama in a highly anticipated Saturday night showdown at Sanford Stadium, Smart’s words offered clarity on how some of the team’s top contributors are progressing through injuries.

Robinson, who has yet to see playing time this season, is reportedly healthier now than he was during fall camp. The sophomore running back has been working through a challenging recovery from an ankle surgery and a nagging hamstring injury that limited his explosiveness in practice.

“His ankle injury was very significant, and he’s worked really hard to overcome it,” Smart said. “Part of his strength — he’s a big guy — is his ability to burst and explode. That’s what makes him special, and that’s what he’s still working to get back. He’s closer to full speed, but he’s still fighting to contribute and help.”

Smart also praised Robinson’s football IQ, noting that he understands the offense “inside and out.” However, with Georgia’s running back room loaded with depth, the head coach acknowledged that playing time will continue to be highly competitive. Robinson’s return to near full strength could give Georgia a valuable power option in the backfield heading into the heart of the SEC schedule.

The Bulldogs also appear to have dodged a more serious setback with running back Dwight Phillips, who went down in the third quarter of the win over Tennessee with what was later revealed to be a mid-foot issue.

“He seems to be fine,” Smart said. “He’s rolling in there, playing special teams and doing things well. He’s really had no limitations.”

Phillips’ availability provides a boost not only to the backfield rotation but also to Georgia’s special teams units, where his speed and instincts have been an asset.

Smart additionally offered updates on offensive linemen Earnest Greene and Juan Gaston. Greene, who suffered a back injury earlier in the season, managed to start at right tackle against Tennessee, while Gaston continues to battle through lingering ankle pain sustained in the opener against Marshall.

“Just working hard — it’s all they can do right now,” Smart said of his linemen. “Put their heads down, grind, and try to get better and continue to develop.”

These updates come at a critical moment for Georgia, which is preparing to face Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide in what could be one of the defining games of the college football season. With Georgia sitting at 3-0 and Alabama at 2-1, the health of key contributors could play a major role in the outcome.

Fans will be eager to see whether Robinson can finally make his 2025 season debut and if Georgia’s offensive line can hold up against Alabama’s formidable pass rush. Saturday night in Athens promises to be a test of depth, preparation, and resilience for Smart’s Bulldogs.
