Ipswich Town: Darnell Furlong on Why He Joined Ipswich Town

When Ipswich Town announced the signing of Darnell Furlong, fans knew they were getting a proven Championship defender, but what they didn’t know was just how much thought went into his decision to join the Tractor Boys. Furlong, who has been one of the most consistent right-backs in the league over the last few seasons, revealed that this was not just a footballing decision – it was about ambition, identity, and being part of something bigger than himself.

In an exclusive interview, Furlong spoke about why Ipswich stood out among the several clubs who came knocking for his signature. “The project here is exciting,” he said with a smile. “I’ve been watching what Ipswich have been building since their promotion back to the Championship, and you can feel the energy around the club. It’s a place where players come to get better and where the fans are fully behind the team. For me, that was a massive factor.”

Furlong pointed to Ipswich’s style of play under their current manager as a big draw. Known for their high-tempo, possession-based approach, Ipswich have become one of the most entertaining sides to watch. “As a full-back, I want to be involved in both defending and attacking,” Furlong explained. “Ipswich play brave football. They like to build from the back, use width, and commit players forward. That suits me perfectly. I didn’t just want to play anywhere – I wanted to play in a system that plays to my strengths.”

Another key factor was the club’s clear ambition to challenge for promotion. “I’m at a stage in my career where I want to compete for something meaningful,” he continued. “Ipswich aren’t just here to survive; they want to push for the top six and beyond. When I spoke to the manager and the sporting director, they laid out the vision for the next few years, and it matched my hunger. That’s why I’m here.”

Furlong also praised the warm welcome he received from the Ipswich fanbase. “You can tell how much football means to this town. Even before the deal was announced, I was getting messages from supporters saying how much they’d love to see me in blue. That matters to a player – to feel wanted before you’ve even kicked a ball.”

Off the pitch, Ipswich’s family-oriented environment appealed to him too. “I’ve got young kids, and I wanted to be somewhere we can settle,” Furlong shared. “Ipswich feels like a proper community club. Everyone around the training ground has been welcoming, and you can see that the players are a tight group. That togetherness is what creates success.”

As the new season looms, Furlong is eager to hit the ground running and repay the faith shown in him. “My goal is simple – help this club win games, keep clean sheets, and be a positive influence on and off the pitch. If we all pull in the same direction, there’s no reason we can’t achieve something special.”

Ipswich Town fans now have another reason to dream big. With Furlong on board, their push for promotion just got stronger – and he’s clearly ready to play his part in the next chapter of the club’s journey.
