Olympics 200m champion Gabby Thomas has disclosed the worrying reason for her struggles at the US Championships, which could hamper her at World Championships.
Olympics 200m champion Gabby Thomas has provided a not so good update regarding her health with one month to go before the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
Thomas sealed her ticket to Tokyo in the 200m race but she had to do it the hard way, finishing third in her specialty at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene on Sunday, behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (21.84) and Anavia Battle (22.13) as she clocked 22.19 seconds.
This came after Thomas had qualified for the 100m semi-final but pulled out in what was a surprise move but she has revealed that she did that to protect herself as she came to the US Championships while nursing a niggling Achilles problem.

“Truthfully, I haven’t been able to train too much which is kind of tough because I am dealing with an Achilles issue and so, if you have to take a couple of weeks off before the USAs is not a good feeling,” Thomas told CITIUS Mag.

“But I am confident in what I am able to do, I have had some good races on my belt this season so I think of that but you always want to go the USAs as healthy at the end of the day so it is rough.”
In what could be a worry for Team USA, Thomas said the injury has been bothering her throughout the season and ahead of the championships, she was forced to take a break for good management of the problem.
“It is something that has been going on like on and off throughout the season and about two weeks ago, I could not even jog on that foot. But it is not something I wanted to give too much life to,” she added.
“I had a big meet coming up, being USAs, and I want[ed] to focus on it. So, I took a week off from training last week. The week before I came here, I was off completely so I had to spend the week doing rehab in LA and I came back the next week and started training.”

Should Fans Be Worried Ahead of Tokyo Worlds?
But with the injury, does she feel confident of going to Tokyo and winning her first gold medal after silver in Budapest two years ago?
“I think I showed enough fitness and health to show that I will be ready. I have seen other athletes who took time and came back and showed they are incredible and I think I can do the same,” said the 28-year-old.
Thomas had started the season well by winning the first leg of Grand Slam Track in Kingston, over the Long Sprints, but lost out by just a point to Jefferson-Wooden in Miami before dropping to third place in Philadelphia.
