Ipswich Town: Ali Maxwell of Not The Top 20 on the Blues’ ambitions

As Ipswich Town prepares for its return to the Premier League after a sensational promotion campaign, one voice that continues to resonate in the EFL podcasting space is that of Ali Maxwell. The co-host of Not The Top 20 Podcast, Maxwell has long been a champion of well-run clubs with clear strategies, and Ipswich Town, under Kieran McKenna, fits that mold perfectly.

Speaking recently about the Blues’ ambitions, Maxwell emphasized the transformation of the club over the past few years, particularly since their 2021 takeover by Gamechanger 20 Ltd. “Ipswich are a blueprint for how to do things right in the modern game,” Maxwell said. “They’ve married data-driven recruitment with strong managerial leadership and a clear identity. That kind of synergy is rare, even in the top tiers.”

The Suffolk club stunned many by securing back-to-back promotions — rising from League One to the Championship, and then from the Championship to the Premier League in just two seasons. Maxwell credits much of that success to Kieran McKenna, calling him “one of the brightest young managers in England.”

“McKenna has created a playing style that’s not only effective but also entertaining,” Maxwell noted. “It’s high intensity, technically demanding, and tactically flexible. He gets the most out of his players, and what’s even more impressive is the cohesion and unity he’s instilled within the squad.”

Maxwell also praised the club’s recruitment strategy, which has been both calculated and value-driven. Rather than chasing big-name signings, Ipswich have focused on players who fit the system, possess strong character, and have growth potential. “From the outside looking in, they don’t throw money around. Instead, they make smart bets on undervalued talent — and that’s how sustainable success is built,” he said.

Looking ahead to the Premier League, Maxwell believes the challenge will be enormous — but not insurmountable. “Let’s be honest, survival is the first goal for any newly promoted side. But Ipswich have the tools to do more than just survive,” he argued. “They won’t abandon their identity just because they’re facing tougher opponents. That bravery could be a double-edged sword, but it’s also what makes them exciting.”

He also touched on the importance of the club’s fanbase and the historic aura of Portman Road. “Ipswich has a passionate, knowledgeable fanbase. You can feel the history when you walk into that ground. It’s a football town — and after years in the wilderness, there’s a real sense of pride returning.”

Maxwell concluded by warning against complacency, while also expressing optimism. “There are no guarantees in football — but if they stick to their principles, continue trusting the process, and make wise decisions in the transfer market, Ipswich can build something lasting. They could become a Brentford or Brighton-type story — a team that punches above its weight by doing the right things consistently.”

With the new season on the horizon, Ipswich Town finds itself back among England’s elite. And with voices like Ali Maxwell backing their approach, there’s a growing belief that the Blues aren’t just here to make up the numbers — they’re here to stay.
