Georgia Reportedly Makes Move With Former Alabama Coach

Kirby Smart brought a championship mentality from the Alabama Crimson Tide to his alma mater, the Georgia Bulldogs. This college football offseason, he will bring home another Georgia alum who previously coached at Alabama.

CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported Wednesday that the Bulldogs are expected to add Garrett Cox to the program’s defensive coaching staff. Cox previously worked primarily with the TCU Horned Frogs linebackers.

The assistant also comes to Georgia with coaching experience from Alabama, the Michigan Wolverines and Tennessee Volunteers.

Cox served as an analyst at Alabama from 2015-18. Smart was the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator through the 2015 season before becoming the Dawgs head coach.

Cox also attended Georgia, earning a bachelor’s degree in Education. He worked as a student assistant for the Bulldogs football defensive staff in 2006 under previous head coach Mark Richt.

Cox also gained experience in the state as the video coordinator at Georgia Southern in 2007 and an assistant linebackers coach at Buford High School in 2008. He will directly work with Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, who, like Smart, also came to the Bulldogs from the Bama coaching staff.

Schumann has had some form of the defensive coordinator title at Georgia over the past six seasons. During this span, Schumann has also worked with inside linebackers.
