The Wisconsin Badgers are in need of a quarterback, as three of their signal-callers, including their two starters from last season, entered the transfer portal this offseason.
Redshirt freshman Cole LaCrue, as well as starters Tyler Van Dyke and Braedyn Locke, all are moving forward, leaving just three projected scholarship quarterbacks for the 2025 class: freshman Mabrey Mettauer and 2025 recruits Carter Smith and Landyn Locke.
So, it’s expected that the Badgers will add at least one quarterback from the transfer portal, and that could be coming very soon.
Wisconsin recently offered former San Diego State quarterback Danny O’Neil a scholarship, and he’ll be heading to campus this weekend on an official visit.
As a true freshman this season, O’Neil was thrust into the starting job from Day 1 and threw for 2,181 yards, 12 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while completing 63.3 percent of his passes.
Initially a three-star quarterback in the Class of 2024, the Indiana native was committed to Colorado but followed offensive coordinator Sean Lewis to San Diego State after the latter was named the head coach there.
Now, he’s seeking another opportunity with three years of eligibility left, and it seems the Badgers are calling.
It’s unclear whether O’Neil would be the lone transfer quarterback Wisconsin would take, but he would get an opportunity to compete for the starting job, while helping bring more numbers into the room.
