The “Baggies” qualified for the playoffs to be promoted to the Premier League after finishing fifth in the previous campaign. They trailed league leaders Leicester by 22 points. West Brom met a tenacious Southampton team in the playoff semi-final; they drew 0-0 at home before falling 1-3 away. In the first game of the current campaign, West Brom defeated QPR 3-1 on the road. They did, however, lose 1-2 to Fleetwood Town in the League Cup over the week.
“The Peacocks” battled hard the previous season to get straight into the Premier League, but three late losses prevented them from making it, and they ended up third. Leeds participated in the promotion playoffs, losing 4-0 at home after a 0-0 draw with Norwich on the road in the semifinals. Nevertheless, Southampton narrowly overcame them 0-1 at Wembley in the playoff final. Leeds and Portsmouth tied 3-3 at home in the opening game of the new season, with Leeds netting a late equalizer. Leeds was humiliated 0-3 at home by Middlesbrough in the League Cup.
