Ian Wright reveals new Arsenal signing is ‘in the works’ as he shares inside knowledge

Arsenal have had a fairly quiet transfer window so far, with just one major exit and one first-team arrival through the door.

Riccardo Calafiori has joined from Bologna, whilst Emile Smith Rowe was sold to Fulham for a substantial fee, but with the Premier League season about to begin, fans are concerned at the lack of movement in signings and sales.

There are still two weeks left to run in the transfer window, and it has been a much quieter summer across the Premier League. Manchester City have only brought in Savinho from Girona, whilst Liverpool are yet to make a first-team signing.

Arsenal could see another body arrive through the door in the coming days though, and legendary former striker Ian Wright has now claimed that the club are actively working on a deal.

Ian Wright reveals Arsenal transfer plan

Speaking on The Stick To Football Podcast, Wright revealed that Arsenal are currently working on a transfer.

“When you look at Arsenal, yes, we have only signed Calafiori, but the main thing is that the players are ready to go again,” he explained.

“I know there is something else that could be in the works for Arsenal, they are going to try to do something, they have to.”

Recent reports have indicated that Arsenal have made an offer for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, and that the Spain star has agreed personal terms over a move which could happen within the next week.

Ian Wright defends Arsenal transfer patience

Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar have been patient in the transfer window as they aim to add true quality wherever possible, with Arteta outlining the characteristics Arsenal signings now need.

Some fans are frustrated that more business has not been done before Arsenal kick off their Premier League title challenge, but Wright also pointed out that improvements can come from within.

“When you got 89 points [last season], you have to find a way to get 90 plus. Five games last season we didn’t score in, that can’t happen. They need the bench to be better,” he added.

“The thing with Gabriel Jesus, the same with Gabriel Martinelli, they themselves will say they didn’t have great seasons, but if they can get the goals that we expect them to get and the consistency we need, we’re probably going to get the goals with what we’ve got.”

Players such as Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli and Oleksandr Zinchenko had fairly underwhelming campaigns last season, but if they can get back to their best, then the squad will already be in a much better shape even before another signing comes in.
