An early Marcus Rashford goal was cancelled out by a fantastic strike from Omari Hutchinson as the two sides shared the points.
In an otherwise even opening ten minutes, it was the visitors who took an early lead, with Marcus Rashford stabbing home an Amad Diallo cross from close range with two minutes on the clock.
Town responded well to going a goal behind, though, with Sam Szmodics testing Onana in the United goal with a low strike on ten minutes.
The home side continued to battle well as the half progressed, with Omari Hutchinson’s free kick on 28 minutes held well by the United ‘keeper.
The visitors’ goal continued to be tested, Hutchinson forcing a block with a low strike following a Leif Davis corner.
Town had a fantastic chance to draw level on 40 minutes, with Davis setting up Liam Delap who was denied impressively at close range by Onana.
The pressure paid off on 43 minutes as Omari Hutchinson curled a shot into the top corner from outside the area for his first goal of the campaign.
The second half started with Town again on top, Delap’s audacious flick from close range kept out by the United ‘keeper on 52 minutes.
United immediately responded to the home side’s pressure with two chances in quick succession, however Jens Cajuste and Dara O’Shea defended brilliantly to deny Garnacho and Fernandes respectively.
In a tense second period, chances were limited for both sides, though Bruno Fernandes came closest from a free kick for the visitors, his curling effort flying narrowly wide of Muric’s goal.
Town had the best chance of the second half on 87 minutes, as Jack Clarke expertly brought the ball down in the box before laying it back to Chaplin, whose shot could only find the gloves of Andre Onana.
Manchester United had a chance to win it late on through Amad Diallo, however he was denied by a brilliant block from Burgess.
