Earlier this week the Detroit Lions received the brutal news that star running back David Montgomery is done for the season after suffering a knee injury that will require surgery.
“Looks like he’s going to require surgery that’ll put him out for the rest of the year,” head coach Dan Campbell said, via ESPN. “He had gotten it at some point yesterday in that game…I mean, David’s so tough. He continued to play through and then got it checked out today and realized that’s what it was. He’s just the ultimate teammate, ultimate competitor. We’re going to miss him, man.”
Montgomery suffered a sprained MCL during the team’s 48-42 loss to the Buffalo Bills. While it’s not a career-threatening injury and one that won’t keep him from the field in 2025, he’s unfortunately done for the season.
However, he’s not letting it stop him from giving back to his community. Lions reporter Dannie Rodgers revealed the star running back was out in Detroit hosting a coat drive just days after suffering his injury.
“RB David Montgomery is hosting a coat drive here in Detroit just days after Dan Campbell said he’ll need surgery and will be done for the season. Montgomery said he’s alive and well when I asked how he’s feeling,” she said on social media.
“Told me he wasn’t put on IR today because he’s working through some logistics and things could change. In terms of if there’s a chance he plays again this season, he says ‘I hope so’. #Lions,” she added.
Fans loved that he was still giving back even despite his injury.
“Monty is one of my favorites in the league. Seems like a cool dude on a team worth rooting for,” one person said.
“One of my favorite lions. My wife now loves the lions because of David Montgomery,” added another.
Detroit sits at 12-2 on the season and could play for the NFC North title against the Minnesota Vikings, also 12-2, in the final game of the regular season.
