Is Aaron Rodgers playing today? Latest update on the NY Jets QB

The NY Jets are set to enter the 2024 season with legitimate Super Bowl aspirations due in large part to the return of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But before the Jets embark on one of the most important seasons in recent franchise history, they’ll first have to get through the preseason.

That preseason officially kicks off today as the Jets will play host to the Washington Commanders in MetLife Stadium at noon ET. These two teams met on Thursday for a joint practice that was dominated by the Jets. Now, they’ll face off in each team’s preseason opener.

The Jets have a number of players fighting for roster spots this summer, but Rodgers obviously isn’t one of them. That’s partially why — along with the inclement weather — the Jets decided to hold Rodgers out of Thursday’s joint practice.

But what about the preseason? Do the Jets plan to play Rodgers at all in the upcoming exhibition games? What about today’s game?

Is Aaron Rodgers playing today?

The short answer is no, Rodgers will not be suiting up in today’s Jets preseason game. Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters last week that the four-time MVP will not play in either of the team’s first two preseason games.

Saleh hasn’t decided if he plans to play Rodgers in the Jets’ final preseason game against the New York Giants, much like he did last year, but the future Hall of Famer will not be appearing in either of the next two games.

This is similar to how the Jets handled Rodgers in his first summer with the team. Rodgers made his Jets debut in the final preseason game, quarterbacking two possessions, the latter of which resulted in a Rodgers-to-Garrett-Wilson touchdown pass.

Of course, the Jets might be a little more cautious with Rodgers this summer, given that he’s still less than 12 months removed from a torn Achilles. Rodgers is going to push to play, however.

But for Jets fans tuning in to watch today’s preseason game against the Commanders, expect to see a heavy dose of Tyrod Taylor, Andrew Peasley, and Adrian Martinez at quarterback. There will be no Aaron Rodgers today.
