GdS: ‘Rossonero Jonathan David’ – Fonseca’s plan after seeing Okafor up close

AC Milan have been heavily linked with a move for Jonathan David in the past few months and the past few transfer windows, but Paulo Fonseca might have found a similar profile in the current squad.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport has a report which talks about Fonseca’s work in preseason on three forwards above all: Samuel Chukwueze who could be the new starter on the right, then Noah Okafor and Alexis Saelemaekers who are new wild cards for the flanks.

The paper point out that the Swiss international was a spectator in all five matches at the European Championship after their head coach seemed to take a jab at Milan for not having used him regularly during the season.

his first season at the club after joining from Red Bull SalInzburg he netted six goals in the league and this led to five wins and a draw. These are not numbers to be sniffed at, and though some would say they were below expectations after the €14m investment, he didn’t get many starts.

Fonseca considers him an interesting asset for the attacking department and would ‘like to make him his Rossonero Jonathan David’. Okafor joined the squad in the USA late after a post-Euros vacation, but those who see him train assure that he has a ‘different’ desire compared to the past.

Reading between the lines of what La Gazzetta say, the similarities are that Okafor and David both can be used either as a ‘false nine’ type centre-forward or wider if needed, while both are 24 years of age, smaller in stature (compared to Giroud and Morata) but fast and technical.
