For Jamal Adams, joining the Lions was an obvious choice.

Veteran defensive back Jamal Adams was encouraged by his family to quickly reach out to Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn after being released by the Tennessee Titans in October. The 29-year-old was eager for another chance to join a team with a legitimate playoff chance. Adams recalls participating in a Pro Day workout organized by Glenn, who was the Saints’ defensive backs coach, prior to being drafted sixth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Given the numerous injuries the Lions have faced this season, Glenn decided it was time to contact Adams, a former three-time Pro Bowler. Adams made his first appearance at Lions practice on Monday, sporting No. 25. During the open portion of practice, he was seen participating in positional drills with the linebackers, which is an intriguing move.

“There’s no better opportunity, man,” Adams said. “Just being home in Dallas and continuing to train, when A.G. called, it was a no-brainer for me.”

When asked about his perspective on the Lions from a distance, Adams responded, “We’ve been kicking everybody’s a–. I’m lucky to be on a team that’s rolling like this. Whatever I can do to help, that’s what I’m here for.”

Adams, a former All-Pro safety, has the physicality to transition into the front seven and compete at linebacker. His versatility will be valuable for the Lions, who are dealing with several defensive injuries.

“It was definitely something I considered,” Adams explained. “Getting an opportunity with a winning team and a first-class organization. When the call came, it felt like a dream come true.”

Dan Campbell mentioned that Monday’s practice, designed to be full speed like a traditional Thursday practice, would be crucial in determining if Adams would be elevated from the practice squad for the Packers game.

“Yeah, we brought him in along with Kwon Alexander, Myles Adams, and Jonah Williams,” Campbell said on 97.1 The Ticket. “We’re going to see who can contribute and how we can best use them. Today’s practice will tell us a lot. By this afternoon, we’ll have a better idea.”

Adams’ first impression of Detroit’s popular head coach mirrored what many new players feel upon joining the Lions.

“He’s fired up. He’s very energetic,” Adams said. “That’s a coach you’d run through a wall for. It’s clear why Detroit is so successful. I’m just excited to be here.”
