Following Fabrizio Romano’s update, Leeds United was correct to veer from the Chelsea transfer agreement – View

Bashir Humphreys, a center-back for Chelsea, was linked to Leeds United, but he ultimately agreed to a loan-to-buy agreement with Burnley.

With only a few days remaining in the summer transfer window, Leeds still has a lot of work to do before the deadline of August 30th closes.

Under Daniel Farke, Leeds appeared to consider adding a second backup center-back to the mix as one of the less important moves.

Earlier in the month, Fabrizio Romano disclosed that Leeds and Burnley were both pursuing center-back Bashir Humphreys.

The 21-year-old played across the back four on either foot and showed excellent ball-control skills while on loan at Swansea City during the previous season. Following Chelsea’s most recent summer spending binge, Humphreys and other academy grads may be sold to make room for new project signings.

The teenage defender, however, is officially on Burnley’s roster after Scott Parker’s team negotiated a deal this week, thus Leeds will not be signing him.

Although he was first stated to be on loan, Romano revealed that the agreement includes a buyout clause starting at £12 million and potentially increasing by £2.7 million:

Burnley is now committed to a possible £14.7 million move for a center-back who, while at Swansea, is probably not a starter and wasn’t quite ready for prime time.

  1. Undoubtedly a valuable addition to the team in his own way, but such a contract represents a big commitment for a player who hasn’t yet shown they have what it takes to play for a team at the top of the division and eventually the Premier League. In retrospect, it’s a relief to see Leeds have averted a deal since that’s not the kind of money they should have been spending.
