Emery in Carlos mistake – Aston Villa confirmed XI v Tottenham

Unai Emery has made a mistake by not starting Diego Carlos against Tottenham as Aston Villa travel to North London on Sunday.

The Villans announced their team to face Spurs on X (3 November) with eight changes made from the EFL Cup defeat against Crystal Palace last time out.

Ollie Watkins, Youri Tielemans and Emi Martinez are the headline names returning to the squad while Jhon Duran can feel hard done by to be dropped to the bench.

Emery made ten changes for the visit of the Eagles in midweek as his side were dumped out of the cup, failing to reach the quarter-finals.

Joe Gauci came in to replace Martinez and performed well but now the Yashin Trophy winner has returned to reclaim his spot in between the sticks.

Ahead of the Argentina international, Lucas Digne and Matty Cash have come into the starting XI with Ian Maatsen and Kosta Nedeljkovic dropping out.

In the centre of defence, Tyrone Mings has been axed and Pau Torres has returned for the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium where he scored last season.

Alongside the Spaniard is Ezri Konsa with Carlos dropping to the bench which could prove to be a mistake as his physicality could come in handy against Dominic Solanke, especially after winning four ground duels with an 80 per cent accuracy last time out [FotMob].

Moving forward into midfield, Emery has opted to bring Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana into the side despite Boubacar Kamara registering an 87 per cent pass accuracy while winning eight duels against Palace. John McGinn has kept his place in the side, moving out wide which has forced Emi Buendia out of the side.

Out wide, Jacob Ramsey has come in with Jaden Philogene dropping to the bench. The winger had 45 touches against the Eagles but completed just three dribbles and made one pass into the final third.

Leon Bailey has also been axed from the starting XI after just 33 touches and a 50 per cent shot accuracy last time out. Morgan Rogers has returned to the side amid potential contract negotiations in B6 [Jacob Tanswell].

Emery has opted to keep his faith in Ollie Watkins in the number nine position seeing Duran benched once again. This despite registering an 80 per cent shot accuracy while also winning five duels, helping out going forward and back. His influence off the bench is likely to have an impact in North London.
