Detroit Lions earn 7 Pro Bowl selections, including Jahmyr Gibbs, Jared Goff: See the list

Barry Sanders did it. Billy Sims did, too. And now Jahmyr Gibbs has joined the list.

Gibbs became the third Detroit Lions running back in franchise history to be selected for the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons when rosters for the NFL’s all-star experience were announced Thursday.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) runs for a touchdown against San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga (29) during the second half at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on

Gibbs was one of seven Lions selected for the Pro Bowl, the most in franchise history during the Super Bowl era on the original ballot. Quarterback Jared Goff, receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, right tackle Penei Sewell, center Frank Ragnow, safety Brian Branch and punter Jack Fox also were named to the Pro Bowl.

Last year, the Lions had seven players picked for the game – Gibbs, St. Brown, Sewell, Ragnow, Aidan Hutchinson, Sam LaPorta and Jalen Reeves-Maybin – but two (Gibbs and St. Brown) went as alternates.

The Lions also had 11 players named Pro Bowl alternates, including LaPorta and return man Kalif Raymond as first alternates. Kerby Joseph, who leads the NFL with nine interceptions, was left off the initial Pro Bowl roster and is a second alternate.

Asked about Joseph’s absence during his weekly interview Thursday on WXYT-FM, before the rosters were announced, Lions coach Dan Campbell said Joseph was worthy of selection.

“I think he’s an outstanding safety and he’s just grown and gotten better and better,” Campbell said. “Here’s what I do know: Is he worthy of that? Absolutely he’s worthy and he should be, but that’s not what this about.”

Gibbs leads the Lions with 1,759 yards from scrimmage including 1,273 rushing, sixth most in the NFL. He split carries with David Montgomery, a third alternate at running back, most of the season, but has played as the Lions’ lead back the past two weeks with Montgomery out with a knee injury.

Goff has set career-highs in passing touchdowns (36) and completion percentage (71.7%) and ranks second in the NFL in passing yards (4,398), while St. Brown has 1,186 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns for the league’s highest-scoring offense.

Goff joins Bobby Layne as the only quarterbacks in Lions history to be picked for multiple Pro Bowls. He made his first Pro Bowl with the Lions in 2022, and went twice with the Los Angeles Rams in 2017-18.

St. Brown and Sewell are three-time Pro Bowlers, Fox was picked for the second time, Branch is a first-time Pro Bowl selection and Ragnow is going for the third straight year and fourth time overall.

The Baltimore Ravens led all NFL teams with nine Pro Bowl selections. The Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles had six Pro Bowl picks.
