Crystal Palace in transfer tussle to sign Danilho Doekhi

Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers are keen on signing 26-year-old Dutch defender Danilho Doekhi from Bundesliga club Union Berlin this month.

According to a report by Football Insider, Danilho Doekhi is the subject of interest from Crystal Palace. The Eagles have been keen on signing a centre-back in the winter transfer window since losing Trevoh Chalobah, with Chelsea terminating the loan deal. However, Wolverhampton Wanderers are also keen on signing the Dutch defender from Bundesliga club Union Berlin this month.

Who is Danilho Doekhi?

Danilho Doekhi has been one of the most underrated defenders in the Bundesliga since joining Union Berlin from Vitesse Arnhem in July 2022. The Dutchman played his part as Die Eisernen clinched UEFA Champions League qualification in his debut season with the German club.

Since then, the 26-year-old has been a dependable performer for the Bundesliga outfit, even though his teammates have blown hot and cold. Doekhi has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for Union Berlin while chipping in with nine goals and two assists.

Meanwhile, the Dutch defender’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. A move to the Premier League might be on the cards before the winter transfer window shuts down, with Crystal Palace among the prospective suitors vying for his signature this month.

Crystal Palace’s interest in Danilho Doekhi is understandable. The Eagles have been scouring the market for a centre-back since losing Trevoh Chalobah after Chelsea terminated his loan deal with the South London club. Chalobah’s departure has depleted Oliver Glasner’s options, with the crisis worsening after Chadi Riad sustained a knee injury.

So, several candidates, including Ousmane Diao, have emerged on Crystal Palace’s radar, with Doekhi also a viable target. However, the Eagles face stiff competition from fellow Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 26-year-old Dutchman’s signature in the final hours of the winter transfer window.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were recently interested in Kevin Danso and came close to signing the Austrian defender before Tottenham swooped in and secured his services. So, it will be interesting to see if the Black Country outfit can beat Crystal Palace to the Union Berlin centre-back’s signature, although it is unclear if the Bundesliga club will sanction the Dutch defender’s exit.
