This column is an opinion piece. To begin, let’s state that Warde Manuel is in an impossible situation. Like his predecessors, the Michigan athletic director is vulnerable to the November Tuesday night walks of shame because he also serves as the chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee. A good sacrifice is adored by the CFP. Therefore, in this instance, the person who expertly defended Jim Harbaugh is suitable.
However, this has nothing to do with Manuel’s day job. We’re here to discuss Tuesday Night Manuel and the shady work he does for the CFP committee, which is the sport’s covert jury/judge.
as TV ratings are at issue here. It simply is. There isn’t much public education being done by the Tuesday night release of preliminary rankings and how they would appear in hypothetical 12-team brackets. If anything, we’re left more puzzled and further in the dark. Furthermore, Manuel’s explanation of the reasoning in his capacity as a spokesperson isn’t really adding much depth to the discussions. Once more, this is how it is intended to be, and the previous committee chairs were equally frustrating for their lack of substance.
