Bring the town back to the happier, vibrant place it deserves to be’:

A new business boss has said his goal is to make Ipswich town centre a safer and more welcoming place as he prepares to step into the role.

Steve Flory, managing director of Needham Market-based signmakers Hudson Group, has been named as the new chairman of Ipswich Central Business Improvement District (BID).

Ipswich born and bred, Mr Flory has worked in business in the area for more than 40 years.

He said: “I don’t believe in standing on the sidelines. Together, we can make Ipswich a safer, more welcoming place where people enjoy spending time.

“My goal is to bring the town back to the happier, vibrant place it deserves to be for the benefit of businesses, residents, and visitors alike.”

Mr Flory said he was deeply committed to improving the town and supporting its businesses.

“I’m honoured to take on this role as chair of Ipswich Central and look forward to working with our extensive professional network to strengthen the BID’s efforts and help Ipswich thrive,” he added.

Mr Flory will take up his post on January 1, succeeding current chairman Terry Baxter, who will step down next month.

He will lead the BID alongside chief executive Lee Walker, who himself came into his role earlier this year.

After leaving the BID, Mr Baxter is set to continue his work as chief executive of Inspire Suffolk. He was also recently made chairman of Governors at Suffolk New College.

He said: “After 10 years as chair, now is the right time for fresh leadership.

“I wish Steve, Lee, and the entire Ipswich Central team every success as they continue delivering for our town.”

Lee Walker, chief executive of Ipswich Central, welcomed the news and felt their goals were aligned.

The BID represents about 400 businesses in the town centre.

Ipswich town centre has faced a sharp decline in recent years.

SuffolkNews reported last week that empty units in the town spiked to nearly 100 in the last financial year – although the council remained committed to filling vacant lots with leisure, cultural, learning and residential offerings.

Mr Walker said: “Steve’s passion for Ipswich and its business community is clear, and his leadership will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our efforts for the benefit of the town.

“I’m excited to work with Steve as part of a new leadership team focused on delivering meaningful outcomes for businesses and residents alike.”
