Arsenal now ready to battle five other clubs in January to sign player Ian Wright loves

Arsenal completed four first-team signings in the summer transfer window, but questions remain over whether there is enough depth in the squad.

The Gunners recruited goalkeeper Neto, defender Riccardo Calafiori, midfielder Mikel Merino and attacker Raheem Sterling, but have already suffered a crisis in midfield.

Merino suffered a nightmare as he picked up a long-term injury in his first training session, and with Martin Odegaard picking up an ankle problem during International duty, Arsenal are suddenly short of midfield options.

This has raised the question over whether there is enough depth in the middle of the park, with youngster Ethan Nwaneri now potentially needed to start, but Arsenal may be targeting another option in the next transfer window.

Arsenal interested in England midfielder Angel Gomes

It has now been reported by CaughtOffside that Arsenal are interested in Lille and England midfielder Angel Gomes.

Arsenal are not the only interested party, as Aston Villa, Newcastle, Napoli, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are all eyeing Gomes up.

Gomes recently received his first England cap, and the former Manchester United prospect is now growing in stature.

A central midfielder who excels at passing and dribbling, Gomes could be the perfect depth option for Arteta if he becomes available in the January transfer window, with it claimed that he is holding off from signing a new deal.

Ian Wright loves Arsenal target Angel Gomes

The 24-year-old was a surprise callup to the England squad, but he impressed in the International break, leading to praise from Arsenal legend Ian Wright.

“Angel Gomes. Jack [Grealish] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] have been spoken about,” he stated during England’s victory over Finland.

“Seeing Gomes in that midfield, constantly on the move. His touch of the ball.”

“He’s [Gomes] constantly available.”

Gomes has thrived at Lille, and could be a strong depth option for Arsenal in January, but it remains to be seen whether a move is possible at the right price.

Arsenal will not want to stunt Nwaneri’s development, but if the teenager is not yet trusted to provide cover for Odegaard, then a more experienced option will be necessary.

If Nwaneri can step up to become another option, then by January Arteta could have Merino and the 17-year-old as viable midfielders, meaning that a move for Gomes is unnecessary.
