Will ReliaQuest Bowl be Jalen Milroe’s final Alabama football game? QB talks future

If Jalen Milroe wants his NFL future to begin in 2025, the opportunity is likely there. Alabama football’s quarterback was recently ranked No. 3 among QBs who could be in the 2025 NFL Draft, by ESPN analyst Jordan Reid, who projected Milroe as an early-to-mid Day 2 pick.

But first, Alabama faces Michigan in Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl. After the Crimson Tide practiced Saturday in Tampa ahead of the bowl game, Milroe was asked if he’d given any thought to whether it would be his final moment with Alabama.

“I think, for me, it’s all about maximizing right now,” Milroe said. “Taking care of right now, because future-tense, it’s hard to get to that point unless you’re taking care of right now. So taking in the moment of just playing with my guys right now. Prepare as much as possible, practice and take care of right now.”

Milroe has spent the past two seasons as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback. He finished the 2024 regular season with 2,652 yards passing, plus 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

He also was a major contributor in the run game, finishing the year with 719 yards and 20 touchdowns that way. On Saturday, he described his favorite parts of playing for the Crimson Tide.

“The best thing for me was just the support system of my coaching staff,” Milroe said. “And just along the way, having the great fan base of Alabama. Playing in Bryant-Denny is like no other, so every moment I had, being the starting quarterback at Alabama, I didn’t take it for granted. So it’s just something great, being able to wear the script A, be the quarterback for this great state and represent my family.”

Alabama’s season-finale begins at 11 a.m. CT Tuesday at Raymond-James Stadium in Tampa. It will be aired on ESPN.

  • Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Ties Michael Jordan By Winning Another Major Sports Award

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Ties Michael Jordan By Winning Another Major Sports Award

Shohei Ohtani, the star of the Los Angeles Dodgers, received a third Male Athlete of the Year award from the Associated Press, capping off his 2024 calendar year with yet another honor. He and basketball legend Michael Jordan were tied after the victory. Only LeBron James, Tiger Woods, and four-time champion Lance Armstrong are ahead of him.

After winning the award in 2021 and 2023 with the Angels, Ohtani received 48 points in the vote of 74 sports journalists from the AP and its members. With ten votes, French swimmer Leon Marchand, who took home four gold medals from the Paris Olympics, came in second. With nine votes, golfer Scottie Scheffler, who took both an Olympic gold medal and the Masters this year, finished in third.

Through translator Matt Hidaka, Ohtani told the AP in an exclusive interview, “I’m very honored.” “Clearly, all of the effort has paid off. I might receive the honor once more the following year. Ohtani’s season was among the finest in baseball history. He signed a $700 million 10-year contract, won the World Series, batted a career-high 310, established the 50/50 club, and received his third MVP award.

Ohtani’s season was among the finest in baseball history. He signed a $700 million 10-year contract, won the World Series, batted a career-high 310, established the 50/50 club, and earned his third MVP award. In early November, the two-way player also had surgery to fix a torn labrum in his shoulder that he sustained during the World Series. He told the AP, “It feels much better, but I don’t have full range of motion yet.” “No pain exists. It is evident that some tightness still exists, but it is gradually improving.

Although the rehabilitation procedure is long, he is making progress. But when it comes to where he plays on the field and whether or not he is pitching, he is more concerned with the here and now than with the future. He remarked, “I think the little things are really important to get me to the end goal, which is just to get back healthy.” Ohtani isn’t ruling out the possibility that he won’t be well enough to pitch when the Dodgers begin the season in Tokyo, despite some rumors to the contrary.

My personal goal is to be fully healthy by the time the opening games do start,” he said. “To be able to pitch and hit would be great, but the situation will kind of guide itself

  • Nick Sirianni provides more details on the ‘sloppy’ play from the Eagles in their recent matchup with Washington.

Nick Sirianni provides more details on the ‘sloppy’ play from the Eagles in their recent matchup with Washington.

There’s no denying it: the Philadelphia Eagles played sloppy football against the Washington Commanders in Week 16.

Need evidence? Just listen to head coach Nick Sirianni, who used those very words to describe his team’s poor performance across the board—offense, defense, and even special teams.

When asked on Monday to expand on his postgame remarks, now that the dust had settled, Sirianni explained that Philadelphia’s first loss since September couldn’t be pinned on any single player, coach, or play. Instead, the overall performance simply fell short against Jayden Daniels’ late-game heroics.

“It was a lot of different things. When you look at it, it’s never just about ‘Hey, this is defense,’ or ‘This is offense,’ or ‘This is special teams.’ You have to look at the big picture. In the second half on offense, we only scored four field goals, right? If we finish one of those drives, it’s a different scenario for the defense. Then there’s the kickoff coverage, which wasn’t up to our standard. We gave them good field position multiple times. We gave them a short field off an offensive turnover. All these things contribute,” Sirianni told Eagles reporters.

Related Philadelphia Eagles News Article continues below NFC playoff picture after Falcons win, Buccaneers stumble in Week 16 “I’m always going to tell you and our guys that we missed some tackles that gave up extra yards. We weren’t on the same page in some areas. We gave them free yards with penalties. There were sloppy plays on defense, but everyone contributed to those 36 points, just like the offense and special teams. This is a team sport, and it requires everyone. Just like we talk about complementary football when we create turnovers and then score, or have a big return and do something positive on offense, the same applies when things don’t go well.”

While some fans may not appreciate Sirianni’s approach of taking a broader perspective rather than pointing out specific players for their poor performances, this has been his style with the Eagles: accepting more responsibility than necessary while defending his players individually, instead of calling them out in public. If the Eagles respond in Week 17 with a strong performance against the Dallas Cowboys, regardless of who’s under center—Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett, or even Tanner McKee—fans will quickly forget about this sloppiness.

Eagles News: “The efficiency of the passing game will determine this team’s ceiling”

NFL Week 15 Under Review: One Big Question for Each of the NFC Contenders – The Ringer

The truth is that the Eagles passing game has been an issue throughout this season, and it’s hard to get to the Super Bowl without being efficient through the air. Among the 20 teams to make the conference championship game in the past five seasons, 18 of them (90 percent) have had a passing offense that ranked in the top quartile (DVOA). The Eagles currently rank 15th, but Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh was a big step in the right direction.

Against the best defense he’ll face this year, Hurts found a rhythm early, completing 12 of his first 13 passes for 146 yards. Overall, it was an 85th-percentile game in terms of dropback success rate. Now the question is whether the Eagles can repeat that type of performance down the stretch and in the playoffs. The defense is Super Bowl caliber. The offensive line is elite. And Saquon Barkley is Saquon Barkley. But ultimately, the efficiency of the passing game will determine this team’s ceiling. The Eagles were the biggest winners in the NFL on Sunday. With their win and the Lions’ loss, the Eagles now have a 40 percent chance of landing the top seed in the NFC. And they have the NFL’s fifth-easiest remaining schedule: at Washington, home vs. the Cowboys, and home vs. the Giants. If the Eagles can jump the Lions and get the bye and home-field advantage, they’ll become the favorites in the NFC.

Eagles film breakdown: Jalen Hurts and Kellen Moore revive the passing game against the Steelers – Inquirer

Whether you would call it “rhythm” or “synchronization,” the Eagles have lacked it in the passing game for some time. Sluggish starts had become a constant for the offense all season and the lack of timing throws from Hurts within the offense’s structure reached a low point against Carolina. Hurts averaged a season-high 3.47-second average time to throw against the Panthers, but he did much better getting the ball out with anticipation against the Steelers on Sunday. His average time to throw dropped to 3.24 seconds, which might not seem like much, but was illustrative of an uptick in drop backs that saw Hurts get the ball out on time to balance out his scrambles.

Fran’s film review: Empty sets help Jalen Hurts and the Eagles passing game break out while Nolan Smith dominates on defense – PHLY

This week, Hurts saw 10 such dropbacks, completing 4-of-7 passes for 51 yards with no touchdowns, no interceptions, and three sacks. The EPA number climbed significantly (up to 0.11) and his success rate rose to a clean 40.0 percent. That’s looking at the whole game against the Steelers. To be honest, this didn’t quite match up with the eye test, because I thought Hurts came out of the gate firing in this matchup. The ball rarely hit the ground in the first half, and the offense had some of its cleanest drives of the entire season to start this game. So I narrowed the focus down to just the first half. In the first two quarters against Pittsburgh, Hurts held the ball for over four seconds on three occasions … all three of them resulted in sacks. The rest of his dropbacks saw him go 12-for-13 for 146 yards and two scores, and an average time to throw of 2.60 seconds flat, his fastest ‘ATT’ in any half of a game this year.

Why your NFL team won, lost in Week 15 – PFF

Wh the Eagles won: Jalen Hurts was exceptionally efficient under center for the Eagles. He completed 19 of his 21 pass attempts from a clean pocket for 220 yards and a passing touchdown while averaging 10.5 yards per attempt. It was a necessary performance from Hurts, as the Eagles‘ passing offense has received some criticism in recent weeks. However, Hurts delivered in the big moments, earning a 79.3 PFF overall grade.

More details on the Nick Sirianni-Jalen Carter sideline interaction – BGN

I’ve seen people ask what the deal was with Nick Sirianni being involved in a seemingly heated sideline interaction during the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, so, let’s take a look at that.

NFL mock draft 2025: Travis Hunter falls to new team in latest first-round projection – SB Nation

    30. Philadelphia Eagles — Michael Green, EDGE, Marshall. Please go watch Michael Green play if you have to, he’s a delight. Green is a blur off the ball with speed and bend, and despite not having much of a role against the run, he can be an instant boost to any pass rush. Philly grabs him and adds him to their group of freakish edge defenders waiting to roll out at any time.

NFL Week 15: Sam Darnold’s rise with Vikings, Lions’ injuries – ESPN+

What the Eagles did to the Steelers in the second half — and especially in the fourth quarter — was a high school coach’s fever dream. Philadelphia strung together a 21-play, 88-yard, 10:29 drive to burn the entire fourth quarter out of their 27-13 win over the Steelers. By time of possession, that is the longest drive to end with the clock expiring since the Seahawks killed 11:53 in a 2009 win over the Jaguars. And by total number of plays, the Eagles’ drive is the second longest to kill the clock in league history, per Elias Sports Bureau. The teams that play in high-scoring games — the Bills, the Lions — are an avalanche on offense. The Eagles are … quicksand. You get stuck in a game against them and just sink, slowly and inevitably. There’s nothing to do about it. You can grab at branches and struggle against the pull, but eventually they just bleed the game away. It is as valuable of an advantage as any team has entering the playoffs; once the Eagles get the ball with the lead, they finish the game like nobody else in the league.

They’re the best defense in the NFL and it’s not even close – NBCSP

They do this every week. Another game holding an opponent below 200 yards, another game not allowing a point after halftime, another game stuffing a pretty good running back, another game not allowing any big plays. The Eagles’ defense is rolling, and they put together another routinely dominating performance Sunday night in the 27-13 win over the Steelers. The Eagles’ defense has now held 10 consecutive opponents to 20 or fewer points, their longest such streak since a 14-game streak the first 14 games of the 2001 season. “I’m really proud of the performance,” Zack Baun said. “I mean, put in tough situations, having to get stops when we needed to. We did a really good job overall. We were very detailed.” The Steelers got those two 1st-quarter takeaways but managed just three points off of them, and that was pretty much ballgame.

The Joy of Defense – Iggles Blitz

There was a time earlier this season when Nolan Smith was talked about as a bust. Fangio kept teaching and Smith kept learning. Now we are seeing player development in action. The light has gone on and Smith is playing well. He’s got 5.5 sacks and 7 TFLs this season. The bust talk is now a distant memory. What has put this defense over the top is that the players work so well together. They cover gaps in the run game. They rush the passer under control. They cover as a group. This isn’t just 11 talented guys running around wildly.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley leads Pro Bowl Games voting by fans – NFL.com

Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley, with 108,016 votes, leads all players in balloting for the 2025 Pro Bowl Games with one week remaining in voting. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson (106,999 votes) ranks second overall, while Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen (101,703), Baltimore running back Derrick Henry (99,346), and Detroit running back Jahmyr Gibbs (94,940) round out the top five. The Detroit Lions lead all clubs in total votes received, followed by the Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles.

Spadaro: Putting Jalen Hurts’ season in perspective – PE.com

    1. Offense finds its groove early. It made a difference as the Eagles came out smoking on offense and then finished the game with an incredible, clock-consuming drive (more on that later). The early success? It was very real. The Eagles had 148 total yards and 10 points in the first quarter, both season highs. As the Steelers did all they could to take away Saquon Barkley and the running game, quarterback Jalen Hurts made plays in the passing game throughout the first half. He completed 12 of 13 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns with a 153 passer rating in the first half. “Jalen did a great job of (adjusting) when we couldn’t get the run game going the way we wanted to,” Head Coach Nick Sirianni said. “I’d say, again, Pittsburgh held teams to 90 yards rushing, and I know we had more than that. So, we still were able to run the ball against a very good front, very good defense. “But we were able to throw it in those scenarios. Again, we’re going to focus on what we need to do, not what everybody else thinks we need to do. Our focus and our main thing for each and every week is how do we win this football game? Today we had to pass for 290 yards, and that was just a great job by our guys.”

Michael Vick reportedly talking to Norfolk State, Sacramento State about head coaching openings – Yahoo! Sports

Michael Vick appears ready to make the jump into coaching. The former Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is in discussions with both Norfolk State and Sacramento State to take over as their head football coach, according to multiple reports on Monday. It would mark the first head coaching job for Vick, who has worked as an analyst for Fox Sports after he retired from the NFL.

Steelers HC Mike Tomlin on late fourth-down punt: “I took a chance” – Behind The Steel Curtain

Pittsburgh Steelers HC Mike Tomlin has been heavily criticized for some of his decision-making in Sunday’s 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, most notably for deciding to punt in the fourth quarter trailing by two touchdowns. With under 11 minutes to play while faced with a fourth-and-7, Tomlin chose to punt from the Eagles’ 46-yard line. Pittsburgh never touched the ball again. When asked about the decision to punt in his weekly press conference, Tomlin shared …

Schedule Update: Washington Commanders Week 17 game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football – Hogs Haven

The NFL’s schedule for the final two weeks is flexible so they can work out the best times for their better games. Washington is set to host the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17, and it will now be on Sunday Night Football, replacing the previously scheduled Dolphins vs Browns game. This game will be critical to both teams’ playoff hopes. The Falcons have been struggling with Kirk Cousins at QB, losing four in a row before this week’s win over the Raiders. They’re 7-7 and will need to win out to grab that last playoff spot. Washington can lock up a spot by beating the Falcons.

Jerry Jones: Dallas Cowboys have no interest in trading Micah Parsons – Blogging The Boys

To be clear the new headline is that Jerry Jones is refuting the headline generated by Stephen Jones. This front office is truly elite at running around in circles and acting like they are moving north. Nevertheless, it is important that Jerry mentioned that the Cowboys do not seem interested in trading Parsons away. This season has been a challenging one in many ways but there is no question that the Cowboys are closer to their ultimate goals with Micah Parsons on their roster and not represented by capital acquired in some sort of trade. For what it’s worth, Parsons handled the rumors rather well. Speaking after the Panthers win, the first time Parsons was available after Stephen’s comments were publicized, he noted that he understood that this was all a business and that he ultimately wanted to be with the Cowboys.

2025 NFL Draft order: The Giants’ path to the No. 1 pick narrows – Big Blue View

The biggest blow of the weekend was the Las Vegas Raiders losing a winnable game to the Atlanta Falcons, falling 15-9. Beyond that, several of the teams the Giants needed to lose to lower their strength of schedule came away with victories. Because of that, while the Raiders’ strength of schedule stayed nearly the same (dropping just 0.001), the Giants’ strength of schedule has risen to 0.550. That’s given them the third-highest strength of schedule in the NFL, trailing only the San Francisco 49ers (0.569) and the Chicago Bears (0.559).

Against the Rams, Samuel had three catches on seven targets for 16 yards, as well as two carries for three yards. In the Super Bowl against the Chiefs, he had three catches on 11 targets for 33 yards, and three carries for eight yards. In the NFC Championship Game in Philly the year before that, he had three catches on six targets for 33 yards, and six carries for -9 yards.

In other words, in the last three games that sealed the Niners’ fate for the season (NFCCG vs. PHI in 2022, SB vs. KC in 2023, Week 15 vs. LAR in 2024), Samuel had nine catches on 24 targets for 72 yards (3.0 yards per target), and 11 carries for two yards (0.18 YPC). Maybe it was the long snapper’s fault. Looking ahead, Trent Williams will be 37 next season, Christian McCaffrey’s long-term viability will be in question, and most importantly, Purdy will be eligible for a contract extension that some believe could be in the ballpark of Dak Prescott’s $60 million per year deal.

David Montgomery injury update: Lions RB needs surgery, out for season – Pride Of Detroit

The Detroit Lions injury luck cannot possibly get any worse. After suffering three more defensive injuries against the Buffalo Bills, the news got even worse on Monday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Lions running back David Montgomery is “out indefinitely” after suffering an MCL injury on Sunday. Per Schefter, Montgomery is undergoing more tests, but could be out for the season. Lions coach Dan Campbell confirmed that Montgomery’s injury will require surgery and he will miss the remainder of the season. Montgomery left the game temporarily early and was tended to by trainers. He eventually returned to the game, but was used sparingly in the second half after the Lions fell behind by several scores.

Report: Patrick Mahomes diagnosed with ‘mild high-ankle sprain’ – Arrowhead Pride

While Mahomes could practice this week, the “week-to-week” description of the injury suggests that Carson Wentz will make the start on Saturday against the Houston Texans. The tricky part for the Chiefs is the quick turnaround to a road game four days later against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day. Given the typical recovery timeline for high-ankle sprains, Wentz could be in line to start the next two games. Kansas City could clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC and playoff bye with victories in both matchups.

Clear As Day’: Pittsburgh Steelers Fans Claim NFL Officials ‘Rigged’ Eagles’ 27-13 Win

The Philadelphia Eagles entered their Week 15 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers unsure of how quarterback Jalen Hurts would play on Sunday. Hurts was seen wearing a medical device on the ring finger of his left (non-throwing) hand. (Hurts admitted after the game the finger was broken.)

The injury didn’t seem to impede his ability too much. He went 25-of-32 passing for 290 yards and two touchdowns. He added another 45 yards on the ground in the Eagles’ 27-13 win over the Steelers in front of a crowd of 69,879 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Some Steelers fans thought the Eagles were gifted an unfair advantage by the league’s officiating crew. As Mark Kaboly with The Pat McAfee Show would point out on X, league referee Alan Eck claimed no punches were thrown by an Eagles player in a fight involving both teams in the first quarter.

“Referee Alan Eck: ‘No punches were observed on the field (by the Eagles). There was no video evidence of punches observed by the Philadelphia Eagles,” Kaboly posted on X.

However, video evidence appears to show Eagles defensive back Darius Slay threw the first punch.

The officials penalized the Steelers 15 yards for unnecessary roughness. Pittsburgh would be penalized for six more yards (five penalties for 60 yards) than the Eagles (seven penalties for 54 yards).

“The refs wanted the eagles to win that game! On the fight in the end zone Slay threw the first punch yet the Steelers only get penalized! This is why people think the NFL is rigged,” wrote a fan.

“Refs rigged this game. Najee lost if for us but the refs really lost it. The carter slap was before the ball was punted. And there is multiple eagles players punching Steelers infront of the refs. Don’t care what anybody says. So obviously rigged,” posted another.

“The NFL is rigged. The refs were clearly biased.. They controlled the outcome of the game…and its all over the internet! The videos don’t lie! Punches to the head in front of a ref, smack clearly BEFORE the kick!!! Its clear as day and the whole world knows,” commented one fan.

“No penalty on the eagles tho! NFL is so rigged,” suggested another.

“Now I’m starting to believe it is rigged eagles with no penalty and they’re the ones that started it,” wrote a fan.

“If you want to witness rigged look at the refs in the Steelers vs eagles game . Most obvious one sided calls you’ll ever see,” argued another.

Cowboys reveal timeline for All-Pro’s return

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Trevon Diggs and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed on a timeline for the All-Pro cornerback’s return to the field, following his attempt to play through the issue in Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals before the worst-case scenario was confirmed in the days after.

Diggs is set to undergo season-ending knee surgery and is expected to need approximately eight months to recover, according to Stephen Jones, ahead of the Cowboys’ matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

“Unfortunately, he had an issue during the game, and credit to him for trying to push through it,” said Jones. “I don’t believe he made it worse. It’s a cartilage problem that finally detached. … It’s going to take some time for him to come back, likely eight months.”

This marks the second knee injury in consecutive seasons for Diggs, and while this injury affects the same knee that ended his 2023 season in September, it is not related to the previously repaired ACL, which remains unaffected.

As a result, the Cowboys have had the starting trio of Diggs, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis together for only one game in their careers.

This also means Diggs will likely be a key candidate to start next year’s training camp on the team’s PUP (physically unable to perform) list in late July. Other candidates for this designation include Dak Prescott, DeMarvion Overshown, Josh Butler, John Stephens Jr., and Zack Martin, should the future Hall of Famer choose to continue playing.

Players starting camp on the PUP list are eligible to return to practice before the regular season begins, allowing them to avoid the injured reserve list, which could affect their season’s start or extend their recovery.

Diggs wraps up the 2024 season having played 11 games, totaling 42 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and two interceptions.

The Player of the Year award goes to a Georgia football signee.

Georgia football and Kirby Smart have secured another top-tier recruiting class, currently ranked No. 4 in the nation for 2025 by 247Sports, trailing Texas, Alabama, and Oregon. While the goal remains to claim the top spot, being No. 4 is still impressive.

The class includes several players to be excited about, especially the five-star talents. One of the most thrilling additions is wide receiver Talyn Taylor, a five-star recruit. Taylor is the first five-star wide receiver to commit to Georgia since 2019, making his arrival even more exciting. To add to the anticipation, he was recently named the 2024 Player of the Year by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Taylor had an outstanding senior season, leading his team to the Illinois 6A state title game. He racked up 84 receptions for 1,617 yards and 24 touchdowns. Additionally, Taylor showcased his exceptional athleticism by returning kicks for touchdowns.

Taylor’s timing couldn’t be better, as Georgia’s wide receivers faced struggles throughout the season. With many of the receivers leaving after this season, Taylor will have the opportunity to compete for significant playing time next fall.

While true freshmen aren’t always expected to make a major impact immediately, Georgia tends to have a few that excel in their first year, and Taylor seems poised to be one of them. This could be especially important since UGA will be replacing Carson Beck at quarterback next year, so any help for the new QB will be invaluable.

Florida RG Damieon George Jr. transfer decision reversed, won’t enter portal

Florida offensive lineman Damieon George Jr. won’t be leaving the program for the transfer portal after all.

Following reports of George’s decision to enter the portal earlier in the week, both 247Sports and On3 learned from team sources that the starting right guard is practicing with the team ahead of the Gasparilla Bowl and plans to return to the Gators in 2025.

On3’s Pete Nakos cited George’s agents Noah Reisenfeld and Adie von Gontard as sources for the initial report, so it’s possible this was a leveraging move that got resolved quickly.

George joined the Gators in 2023 as a transfer out of Alabama. He started 10 games at right tackle, one at left tackle and came off the bench in another throughout last season. He transitioned to guard over the offseason and started 10 games at right guard in 2024 for Florida.

Pro Football Focus gave him a 70.2 overall offensive grade, a 71.0 as a run blocker and a 73.4 as a pass blocker. He allowed just seven quarterback pressures and didn’t give up a sack this year.

With Florida losing Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson to graduation, the Gators could move George back to right tackle in 2025. That would allow younger guards, such as Bryce Lovett and Kamryn Waites, to remain in the rotation and give George a chance to prove himself again at his natural position.

For better or for worse, Billy Napier and crew are looking for the diamonds in the rough in the transfer portal

Florida Football is set to host a number of transfer portal prospects, and very quickly, Gator fans are noticing a pattern playing out that has played out every year of the Billy Napier Era.

Napier’s approach might land some talent we won’t fully appreciate, but it also runs in contrast to the narrative he tried to sell fans in the lead-up to National Signing Day and the transfer portal.

Florida Football: Show me the money

One of the areas many fans believe Florida needs to address in the portal is at wide receiver. At first glance, there were a ton of intriguing options in the initial wave of portal entrants for Florida to explore.

But it is quickly evident that Florida isn’t going to land any of the “big ticket” receivers they have kicked the tires at. Nic Anderson, Micah Hudson, Barion Brown, Dane Key, and Eric Rivers are among the top-rated receivers who all look like they will be heading elsewhere in 2025.

Even Reggie Virgil, the Miami (OH) receiver we profiled earlier this week, committed to Texas Tech overnight when he was supposed to visit Florida this weekend.

At this point, Florida’s wide receiver board is essentially J.Michael Sturdivant from UCLA and Chase Sowell from ECU. There are merits to both players, but it highlights Napier’s perception issue as the transfer portal season progresses.

Part of the justification for keeping Napier was that his buyout money could instead be funneled into NIL money. Florida fans were sold a narrative that Florida was going to be “aggressive” in the transfer portal this offseason.

Instead, we are once again watching Napier employ his diamond-in-the-rough strategy.

Don’t get it twisted; his approach has landed some “nice” players such as George Gumbs, Chimere Dike, or Brandon Crenshaw-Dickson, but if Florida is going to make the playoffs in 2025, they need more than “nice” players; they need elite.

Last year, Florida’s best transfer portal grab, Elijhah Badger, fell into their lap at the last second. That unexpected player may still be out there, but after watching Florida move at a snail’s pace last year in the portal, Gator fans are quickly realizing that’s what’s happening again this offseason.
