Jalen Hurts’ Playoff Status Teased in Eagles’ Latest Announcement

The Philadelphia Eagles closed out their 2024 regular season with a Week 18 win over the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon, notching a 20-13 victory over the visiting division rival.

The Eagles had already locked up the No. 2 seed in the NFC leading into this regular-season finale, but this victory gave the franchise its 14th win of the year heading into the playoffs.

Philadelphia accomplished this win despite the absence of several key players, including star quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Hurts has been out since suffering a concussion during the first quarter of Week 16’s loss to the Washington Commanders. The 26-year-old QB is still progressing through the NFL’s concussion protocol, and his status for next Sunday’s Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers is still up in the air.

That being said, the Eagles teased Hurts’ postseason status in an announcement on Sunday evening.

Hurts was featured as a prominent figure on the Eagles’ playoff graphic, joining Jalen Carter and Saquon Barkley.

“Playoffs start NOW. See you on Sunday, 1/12 at 4:30pm on FOX,” the Eagles wrote on X.

Several fans and analysts view this as a good omen for Hurts’ chances to take the field in the Wild Card round.

“The Eagles are using Jalen Hurts in promotion for the Eagles Packers playoff game next Sunday. Jalen is progressing through concussion protocol and was at the Eagles walkthrough Saturday. Positive signs for him to be out there this coming week,” NBC’s John Clark wrote.

“Hello Jalen! Oh…Hello Jalen!” another fan added.

“I spy someone on the graphic,” another said.

The Eagles were able to notch victories in Weeks 17 and 18 with a combination of Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee at the quarterback position, but there’s no question the Philadelphia offense operates at a different level with Hurts under center.

Micah Parsons thinks Cowboys would’ve beat Philly if it wasn’t for the scoreboard

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons had some interesting analysis on the team’s 41-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons reacts during the first quarter against the Houston Texans.

The Dallas Cowboys were outclassed in the team’s Week 17 blowout loss to the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles. There aren’t many other ways to spin a 41-7 loss.

Dallas couldn’t stop Eagles running back Saquon Barkley or wide receiver DeVonta Smith, and they certainly couldn’t get any offense going.

The team looked lost without CeeDee Lamb on offense, and the playcalling reflected that.

The game was never close and it may have cost Mike McCarthy any chance of a return to Dallas next season, but star edge rusher Micah Parsons doesn’t think it was all bad.

In fact, according to Parsons, the Cowboys could have won if it wasn’t for that pesky scorecoard. Parsons spoke to the media after the loss and said the game really came down to five plays.

    That’s some interesting analysis.

You would have to assume Jerry Jones and company don’t view the loss the same way.

Dallas will have the opportunity to end the disappointing season on a high note when they host the division-rival Washington Commanders in the season finale in Week 18. Let’s hope they don’t turn on the scoreboard.

Philadelphia Eagles Quarterback Kenny Pickett’s Tiny Hands Caused Hilarious Cartoon-Like Fumble

The biggest knock on Kenny Pickett when he entered the NFL Draft was the size of his hands. There was a widespread concern that the former Pittsburgh Panthers quarterback would not be able to hold onto the ball when he got to the next level.

He unfortunately proved the hand size haters correct on Sunday with the funniest fumble of the entire season.

Pickett, the No. 20 overall pick in 2022, went to great lengths to increase his hand size prior to the draft. Although some of his unusual techniques were effective, the 2021 ACC Player of the Year recorded a below-average measurement at the NFL Combine after he initially refused to get measured at the Senior Bowl. His tiny hands later raised concerns at training camp on a botched snap. You get the idea.

    Kenny Pickett has small hands!

Now in his third year in the NFL, the Steelers’ former first-round pick serves as the backup to Jalen Hurts on the Eagles. He was thrust into the starting lineup against the Cowboys.

Kenny Pickett actually played pretty well during Philadelphia’s blowout win. However, he did not finish the game after a rib injury during the second half and it is easy to succeed when Saquon Barkley is the running back.

Prior to that point, Pickett was on the wrong end of an embarrassing play during the second quarter. The ball got stuck in his hand after a defender made contact during the throwing motion and it resulted in a hilarious fumble. Here is how it happened in real time:

The back angle provides a better look at what caused the fumble:

This replay is by far the most comical:

Some people might say that Kenny Pickett debunked the hand size issue because the ball stayed in his hand long enough to be a backwards pass. On the contrary!

If Pickett had bigger hands, he would not be wearing gloves. The gloves are sticky, which helped the ball to stay in his hand. That would’ve been an incomplete pass. Additionally, if Pickett had bigger hands and was wearing still gloves, he would’ve been able to hold onto the ball instead of fumbling. Stay woke!

  • Do Philadelphia Eagles have QB crisis? Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett listed on injury report ahead of Cowboys clash

Do Philadelphia Eagles have QB crisis? Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett listed on injury report ahead of Cowboys clash

Injury concerns are mounting on the quarterback front for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jalen Hurts (concussion) and Kenny Pickett (ribs) appeared on the team’s Christmas Day injury report as “did not practice” and “limited participation,” respectively. Since the team didn’t practice Wednesday, the report represents an estimation.

Hurts exited Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders in the first quarter after sustaining a head injury. Pickett entered and finished the drive with a touchdown pass to A.J. Brown.

Pickett completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards, with one touchdown and a costly interception deep in Eagles territory that Washington converted into a touchdown. He also sustained a rib injury during the game.

The Commanders erased a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to win 36-33.

MLB Trade Rumors You Can’t Miss: Burnes, Bregman, and Yankees’ Next Big Move!

Now, attention shifts to Week 17’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys and the crucial question of who will be under center.

If Jalen Hurts and Kenny Pickett can’t go for Sunday, who will be the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting QB?

    Tanner McKee, Philadelphia Eagles

Thursday’s practice should provide more clarity on the quarterback situation. While Hurts remains in the concussion protocol, making his status uncertain for the Cowboys game, concerns about Pickett’s rib injury could force the Eagles to turn to their third quarterback.

In that scenario, Philadelphia would rely on second-year quarterback Tanner McKee, who has yet to take an NFL snap. The Eagles selected McKee in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Stanford.

The Eagles currently have no quarterbacks on their practice squad. Their decision not to sign additional quarterbacks this week might suggest optimism about the availability of both Hurts and Pickett.

The Eagles enter as eight-point home favorites against the Cowboys. If the Eagles win Sunday, they clinch the NFC East title.

  • Philadelphia Eagles legend Bill Bergey dies after long battle with cancer

Philadelphia Eagles legend Bill Bergey dies after long battle with cancer

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Michael Barkann remembers Philadelphia Eagles legend Bill Bergey who died on Christmas after a remarkable career that included a trip to the Super Bowl with the Birds.

Legendary Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey has died after a long battle with cancer, his son announced on social media.

Jake Bergey, a former pro lacrosse player, posted the news Wednesday morning on X, the former Twitter:

“After a long hard 3 year battle, Dad lost his fight with Cancer. The best father, friend, grand father, football player and out right great person in this world. I will truly miss him. Love you dad.”

In an interview last year with the Eagles’ web site, Bergey spoke of how Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelley, a contemporary of Bergey’s, became a trusted confidant after he was diagnosed with jaw cancer in 2021.

“He has kind of been my inspiration,” Bergey said. “He keeps me on the up and up. ‘Just remember,’ he would say, ‘You’re a football player, you’re tough, and you can beat this. You can handle this.’

Child and mother among 6 struck by taxi that veered onto sidewalk in Manhattan

“He didn’t give me a Knute Rockne rah-rah-type of a talk. He just said, ‘Bill, one thing. Are you eating?’ And I said, ‘No, I’m not really eating much at all.’ And he was this blunt, ‘You either eat or you die.’ And I said, ‘OK, I think I’m going to start eating then.’

“He talks about his five brothers, that he didn’t want to get out of his room one day, and the five brothers said, ‘Well, you’re getting out of here whether you want to or not.’ And the five brothers just took him right down the hall and gave him a nice long walk. And he appreciated that.

“And I will tell you one thing. My kids have stepped up to the plate like I’ve never seen anybody step up to the plate. My three boys drove me all over the place, gave my wife (Micky Kay) a break. I don’t know if I could have made it without them.”

Bergey was originally a 2nd-round pick of the Bengals out of Arkansas State in 1969. After five years and one Pro Bowl in Cincinnati, he was traded to the Eagles in 1974 and immediately became a difference maker.

    He made Pro Bowls in four of his first five seasons with the Eagles – 1974, 1976, 1977 and 1978 – and was a 1st-team all-pro after the 1974 and 1975 seasons and a 2nd-team All-Pro in 1976, 1977 and 1978.

His final season was 1980 and his final game was Super Bowl XV against the Raiders in New Orleans.

Bergey and Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik are the only Eagles linebackers ever to make 1st-team All-Pro in consecutive years. Bednarik and Maxie Baughan, a Hall of Fame finalist this year, are the only linebackers in Eagles history to reach more Pro Bowls than Bergey.

Bergey was one of 60 nominees that the Pro Football Hall of Fame seniors committee considered this fall but didn’t advance to the next round.

Even today, nearly half a century after he retired, Bergey’s 27 interceptions are 10th-most in NFL history by a linebacker, and five of the nine ahead of him are enshrined in the Hall of Fame in Canton. Eighteen of those came as an Eagle, and he’s tied with Bednarik and William Thomas for most in franchise history.

Although sacks didn’t become an official stat until 1982, research into sacks before 1982 shows Bergey with 18 ½ sacks in his career, 14 of them with the Eagles. He also had 21 fumble recoveries – including an NFL-high six in 1975.

Bergey was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 2009.

After he retired, Bergey did color on Eagles radio broadcasts and spent several years on Eagles pregame and postgame shows. Bergey lived in Chadds Ford in Delaware County after his football career ended.

He was diagnosed with oral cancer in 2021 but continued to visit Eagles training camp every summer.

  • Diontae Johnson’s absence in Eagles loss fuels unprecedented speculation

Diontae Johnson’s absence in Eagles loss fuels unprecedented speculation

When the Baltimore Ravens traded for wide receiver Diontae Johnson, it was celebrated as a pivotal move to elevate their offense. Johnson’s track record as a reliable pass-catcher was supposed to complement Lamar Jackson’s MVP-caliber season and add even more firepower to an already dynamic unit. Yet, in Sunday’s 24-19 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Johnson didn’t see a single snap, leaving fans bewildered.

It wasn’t just fans raising eyebrows. Jackson himself addressed Johnson’s absence after the game. Meanwhile, head coach John Harbaugh remained cryptic when asked about the situation.

The lack of clarity, combined with the team’s struggles on offense, has fueled questions about whether the Ravens are maximizing the talent they worked hard to acquire.

What is going on with Diontae Johnson and the Baltimore Ravens?

Johnson’s role, or lack thereof, has been a topic of discussion since he arrived in Baltimore. Despite his clear potential to enhance the Ravens’ passing game, Johnson has struggled to carve out a consistent role. In his first two games with the team, he was barely utilized, playing just 17 snaps against Denver and seeing only two targets the following week.

After those games, Johnson posted a cryptic tweet, “It’s always two sides to a story.”

While his comment wasn’t overtly negative, it hinted at some underlying tension or miscommunication. Whether it’s related to playbook familiarity, coaching philosophy, or something behind the scenes, Johnson’s integration into the offense has been anything but smooth.

The Ravens needed all hands on deck against Philadelphia’s top-ranked defense, but Johnson didn’t even dress for the game. Baltimore’s offense stalled repeatedly, especially in the second half, as they failed to convert critical drives into points. For a team that traded for Johnson to be a difference-maker, leaving him out entirely felt like a misstep.

Jackson’s frustration with the situation underscores how much Johnson’s absence is being felt. This is a player who was supposed to alleviate some of the pressure on Zay Flowers and Mark Andrews, giving Jackson another reliable target.

Instead, Johnson has become a question mark at a time when the Ravens need answers.

The Ravens’ cautious approach to integrating Johnson may have been understandable at first, but the excuses are starting to wear thin. As the season heads into its most crucial stretch, Baltimore can’t afford to keep Johnson sidelined or underutilized.

It’s evident that Johnson is eager to contribute and be part of the team’s success. Now, it’s up to Harbaugh and the coaching staff to find a way to involve him. This could mean simplifying the playbook, adjusting personnel packages, or simply allowing him to prove himself on the field. The Ravens need to act quickly.

There’s speculation Johnson arrived at the game late, and his zero snaps served as a punishment for not being on time. However, there are no reports to suggest the rumors are true.

Baltimore didn’t trade for Diontae Johnson “for nothing,” as Jackson put it. If this team is serious about making a deep playoff run, it’s time to start using all their weapons. That includes Johnson.

  • Eagles Urged to Sign Former $101 Million All-Pro Edge Rusher

Eagles Urged to Sign Former $101 Million All-Pro Edge Rusher

If the Philadelphia Eagles are looking for short term help rushing the passer, there aren’t a lot of options available to them this late in the season.

One edge rusher hat is available is a familiar name who might have just enough gas left in his tank to make an impact for the NFL’s hottest team as they make a run toward the top seed in the NFC playoffs and, perhaps, a Super Bowl.

Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder thinks the Eagles should bring in 35-year-old former NFL All-Pro edge rusher Justin Houston for the final 5 games of the season.

After a win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 13, Philadelphia is 10-2 and in first place in the NFC East headed into a Week 14 home game against the Carolina Panthers.

“The Eagles’ edge-rushers have taken a hit recently with Bryce Huff suffering a wrist injury and Brandon Graham going down with a triceps injury that will sideline Graham for the rest of the year,” Holder wrote on December 2. “Granted, the club did claim Charles Harris off waivers this week, but it couldn’t hurt to bring in another veteran pass-rusher with playoff experience. Houston obviously isn’t the player he used to be, but the 35-year-old did have 9.5 sacks two years ago and would be worth the practice squad addition to provide some insurance heading into the postseason.”

Houston Dominated OTs For Over Decade

The Eagles might be able to play on Houston’s desire to win a Super Bowl to lure him back to the game. Houston spent the first 8 seasons of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he signed a 6-year, $101 million contract in July 2015 after he led the NFL with a mind-boggling 22.0 sacks in 2014.

Houston’s time in Kansas City came to an end at an unfortunate time after he was released following the 2018 season. In the 5 seasons since Houston left, the Chiefs have won 3 Super Bowls and played in the Super Bowl 4 times.

Houston, who owns the NFL career record for safeties (4), has spent the time since he left the Chiefs as a mercenary edge rusher. He spent 2 seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, then 2 more seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before splitting 2023 between the Panthers and Miami Dolphins.

In 13 NFL seasons, Houston has 112.0 career sacks and $107.1 million in career earnings.

Eagles Might Not Want to Mess With Chemistry

Houston would be a veteran addition to the locker room that’s not likely to cause any waves — you don’t get to over a decade in the NFL by being that type of player.

Still, the Eagles and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio might not want to mess with what’s been arguably the NFL’s elite defense in 2024.

Through 12 games, the Eagles are first in the NFL in team defense (282.8 yards), fourth in scoring defense (18.2 points), seventh in rushing defense (104.8 yards) and third in passing defense (178.0 yards).

When it comes to rushing the passer, it’s not been any 1 player who the Eagles have staked that aspect of their game to — while linebacker Josh Sweat leads the team with 7.0 sacks, the Eagles have 8 players with at least 2.0 sacks.
