The Washington Commanders progress to their first NFC Championship since 1991 after shocking the Detroit Lions.

The freezing-cold As the sixth-seeded Commanders punished an error-plagued Lions effort, Daniels tossed two touchdowns and finished with 299 passing yards and no interceptions, leaving Detroit’s Ford Field in shellshocked stillness.

One of the most formidable teams throughout the regular season, the Lions’ explosive offense helped them reach a 15-2 record, leading many to think they were primed to win the franchise’s first Super Bowl.

However, a series of mistakes, including five turnovers, caused Washington to gain insurmountable momentum in an intense slugfest, and their hopes of winning the championship were dashed in spectacular way.

These scores came during a frenzied second-quarter rush in which the two teams combined for an incredible six touchdowns.

With tight end Sam LaPorta catching an incredible one-handed touchdown throw and Jameson Williams sprinting 61 yards into the goal zone following a deft Detroit trick play, the Lions themselves generated two thrilling moments.

When running back Williams threw an interception on a risky Detroit trick play, Washington was able to reclaim possession and score their sixth touchdown of the game, making the score 45-28.

This effectively ended the game. In the final seconds of the fourth quarter, Goff ended a miserable performance by making his third interception to end the game. With a 12-5 record at the end of the season, the Commanders will now travel to play the Philadelphia Eagles or Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship game next week, with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

  • The Lions are expected to make a historic trade for a former All-Pro valued at $80 million.

The Lions are expected to make a historic trade for a former All-Pro valued at $80 million.

Dan Campbell’s team has won two straight NFC North titles, advanced to the 2023 NFC Championship Game, and finished as the No. 1 seed in the 2024 NFC, making the Detroit Lions one of the most formidable football teams in the past two seasons.

Detroit is still on the rise and will have another offseason to strengthen a roster that doesn’t have many urgent needs, despite their devastating divisional-round loss to the Washington Commanders.

The Lions still have some obvious vulnerabilities, particularly at wide receiver, despite general manager Brad Holmes’ outstanding work turning the team into an NFC powerhouse.

Detroit lacks elite receiver potential and output outside from Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Daniel Alameda of The Wright Way Network believes Detroit will make a blockbuster trade for Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and the Lions should try to add another playmaker this offseason.

Los Angeles has relied on Kupp as a playmaker ever since he joined the league in 2017. In addition to recording two 1,000-yard seasons, the 31-year-old has amassed over 700 receiving yards in six consecutive seasons.

The best season for the 2017 third-round pick was in 2021, when he had one of the best wide receiver seasons ever. With 145 receptions for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns, Kupp won the triple crown and was named MVP of Super Bowl LVI.

Although Kupp has clearly suffered from injuries in recent years and isn’t the same player he was in 2021, he has nevertheless been a dependable safety net for Matthew Stafford and is a smart route runner who seldom drops passes. It’s unclear if Kupp will stay with the Rams.

The veteran said he intends to play football next season but isn’t sure if he’ll be in Los Angeles following the team’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.

During the Rams’ season-ending open locker room session, Kupp remarked, “I think I have a lot of good football left in me.” “Next year, I’ll be playing football. I am aware of that. “Who knows what’s going to happen,” Kupp continued. “I have no control over that.

And we’ll see what it turns out to be. What that will look like, or anything like that, is beyond my clarity. I would certainly love to be in Los Angeles, but I’m not sure what that would entail.

The Lions should definitely try to sign the 2021 All-Pro if Kupp is put on the trade market.

Kupp would be an excellent wide receiver three, and the Lions have the means to make a trade with Los Angeles, even though the former Eastern Washington star’s finest days are over.

According to Over the Cap, Detroit is expected to have $57 million in cap space this offseason. With two years remaining on a $80 million contract extension he signed in 2022, Kupp shouldn’t scare Brad Holmes away because Detroit wants to contend for a Super Bowl right now and has plenty of salary space.

The Lions also ought to have enough draft capital to negotiate a deal with the Rams in order to acquire Cooper Kupp and bring him to the Motor City.

  • Liverpool’s statement performance: Brentford’s victory has implications for the Premier League title chase ahead of their matchup with Ipswich Town

Liverpool’s statement performance: Brentford’s victory has implications for the Premier League title chase ahead of their matchup with Ipswich Town

According to Reds expert David Lynch, Liverpool’s victory over Brentford last Saturday could be a turning point in the title race, and a similar showing against Ipswich Town on January 25 would be sufficient to guarantee victory.

Darwin Nunez scored twice in second-half stoppage time to give his team all three points, but Arne Slot had to wait until the 91st minute for his team to take the lead against Brentford.

With Arsenal drawing with Aston Villa later the same day, the Reds moved six points clear of the Gunners at the top of the Premier League and boast the advantage of having a game in hand. Lynch was adamant that while the title is by no means won, Liverpool are getting to the point where finishing first looks almost inevitable, comparing the team’s win on Saturday with their comeback victory against Aston Villa in 2019, telling Sports Mole:

“It was hugely significant that they found a way to get over the line in this one because the comparison to the Villa game in 2019 is really apt. “That [Villa] game meant Liverpool were five points clear  Man City going into the side’s meeting at Anfield

Liverpool score two goals late on [against Brentford], Arsenal fans are gutted, that atmosphere transmits into the stadium. As soon as Villa pull back a goal, doubts creep in. Villa get points and the gap is back to six points with Liverpool having a game in hand. You have to disregard the underlying numbers and statistics and [recognise] the mental impact those moments can have – that that will be hugely significant. It felt like one of those weekends you’ll look back at and say, ‘that’s where Liverpool won the title.’”

Tottenham Face Chelsea Challenge for €25M-Rated Ipswich Town Ace After Randal Kolo Muani Miss

Randal Kolo Muani, a French striker, chose to join Juventus rather than move to the Premier League this January, ending Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of him. During his first two seasons at PSG, the 26-year-old has struggled to make a big impression, which has fueled whispers of a possible transfer this month.

This season, Kolo Muani has only played 453 minutes in all competitions and has not been able to establish himself as a consistent starter.

His absence from PSG’s final three 2024 games has only made people wonder if he will stay with the team.

Tottenham is “gutted” to have lost out on Kolo Muani, according to Graeme Bailey, head correspondent for TBR Football. The Premier League team is still keen to bolster their assault before the January transfer window ends, though.

Pictures According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham is considering a move for Ipswich striker Liam Delap this month, however Chelsea might present a challenge. According to Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old is worth €25 million, but because these two parties are interested, the price will go up.

  • Three things we discovered: Manchester City 0–6 Ipswich Town

Three things we discovered: Manchester City 0–6 Ipswich Town

symbol 02:00 02:00 The 24 year old grabbed two first half goals, with an assist for Mateo Kovacic in between, to give City a comfortable edge at the midway mark of the match against the Tractor Boys.

Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and James McAtee completed the rout in the second half to give City a well deserved three points and subject Ipswich to a humiliating loss. Here are three things we learned when City ran riot against Ipswich:

Even by today’s standards, they got off to a bad start. More dropped points from City were likely, and Ipswich was, in my judgment, the superior team. But after a fantastic build-up down the left side, Foden’s goal—finished off like the Foden from the previous season—set City on their way, and they didn’t turn back. Ederson was really effective at the back, pinging the ball around and making a few solid saves.

Although Josko Gvardiol and Matheus Nunes are technically playing out of position at full back, they both appeared at ease and adapted. It was wonderful to see Ruben Dias again, and it’s no accident that Manuel Akanji was there.

Erling Haaland has found his shooting boots again, Phil Foden and Kevin de Bruyne are returning to their best up front, and Jeremy Doku is making a strong case to start games on the left side despite competition from Jack Grealish, Savinho, soon-to-be Oscar Bobb, and Omar Marmoush.

They have demonstrated that City can still compete at the highest level when they are confident and have more players in good form.

Even though it was just Ipswich, the performance was unquestionably better than anything we’ve seen this season and is very reassuring to see ahead of the upcoming challenging stretch. With three players coming in—Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Douglas Luiz, an alternative midfielder, and possibly two more—City is well-positioned to secure a top four finish and rebuild in the summer in order to compete for the league title the following year.

City can only realistically operate with four players in attack, and choosing that quartet will be a difficult job for Pep Guardiola.

Haaland is nailed on, as are De Bruyne and Foden when they’re fully fit. But that leaves one more space to be battled out by as many as six players. If Doku carries on the way he has in City’s last two games against Ipswich and Salford City, he’ll keep his place, but Savinho is also in a rich vein of form too.

  • Updates from Dan Campbell’s news conference: What the Detroit Lions head coach stated

Updates from Dan Campbell’s news conference: What the Detroit Lions head coach stated

Dan Campbell spoke Monday morning in Allen Park at his news conference for the final time of the season, after the Detroit Lions squandered homefield advantage Saturday night in the NFC playoffs in an upset 45-31 divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.

“We got to where we wanted to get to and then we did not perform,” Campbell said. “Credit Washington, they did what they needed to do and they played a good game.

But a little bit for us, when you feel like, ‘hey you gotta bring your A game,’ I think if we bring our B game we got a chance to win that game. And we didn’t bring that.” More: Mitch Albom: A letter to the Football God

After a franchise-best 15-2 regular season ended in a huge letdown that left fans in shock, Campbell added that he has experienced a range of emotions, from rage to feeling like he lost a family member, but he is now prepared to go on. “I can say, ‘You know what, ‘you fell man, what are you going to do about it?’” while I’m looking in the mirror.

We’re at that point, so go ahead, man. Campbell acknowledged that he anticipates losing both coordinators, DE Aaron Glenn and OC Ben Johnson, to head coaching positions.

“I haven’t been told anything, I’ve got a feeling, but I’m prepared to lose both,” he stated.

If Johnson does depart, Campbell said, Goff will have “a lot of input” in choosing the next coordinator.

“We couldn’t overcome it” and the defense was unable to “apply enough pressure” on rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to have him make a mistake, he said, bemoaning the five turnovers versus Washington. “We might stand a chance if we just flip it over three times.

That’s absurd, considering that we’re discussing three. Furthermore, I don’t want to diminish Washington in any way; they deserve that victory.

We shot ourselves in the foot, though, dude. And we simply did that game, even though we haven’t done it yet.”

  • Ipswich 0–6 Manchester City: After scoring six goals at Portman Road, Pep Guardiola’s team moved up to fourth place in the Premier League.

Ipswich 0–6 Manchester City: After scoring six goals at Portman Road, Pep Guardiola’s team moved up to fourth place in the Premier League.

Manchester City’s resounding 6-0 victory at Portman Road propelled them into the top four, dealing Ipswich six devastating blows. Fortunately for Pep Guardiola, Phil Foden was available to offer the foundation to guarantee that City was fourth by halftime.

City started the game in ninth place and needed a three-goal margin to move up into the top four. Just before the half-hour mark, Foden opened the score with a close-range shot.

Foden was in and around the area once more just three minutes later (30), which allowed Mateo Kovacic to score City’s second goal.

In a classic, avaricious manner, a third goal just before halftime virtually guaranteed all three points. There, the city was not finished.

When Jeremy Doku broke through the Tractor Boys’ defense to add a fourth goal after the interval, Ipswich fell even more apart.

After missing an early opportunity to open the score, Erling Haaland, who scored a hat-trick in the rematch in September, was on the sidelines of the goalmouth action.

However, that didn’t last long because a few days after confirming his long-term future at City, he joined the action and punished a Jack Clarke error to guide home a fifth goal.

As it appeared like City would start to rest players for their Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, James McAtee was brought in. Kevin de Bruyne was replaced by McAtee, who took advantage of the situation to score a goal of his own. For the final ten minutes of the game, Kieran McKenna’s team was chasing shadows, so the final whistle couldn’t have come any sooner. Ipswich’s loss leaves them in the bottom three.

Most likely the best all-around performance of the season. One of our greatest shows so far this year. Maintaining player fitness is crucial as we gain momentum. I attribute it to the team’s improved camaraderie and people’s improved physical condition. “We don’t hurry when we score. We are maintaining possession, and today’s build-up play was crucial. “It taught me everything [bad spelling of form].”

It’s nice to see me playing football again, smiling, and scoring goals.

I want to add to that and continue. You can’t predict what might occur. Remaining in the top four is the goal.

We are thrilled to be returning to the activities that have characterized this team over the past ten years.

I’m really happy with the three points, but it will be extremely difficult to qualify for the Champions League the next season. We were far superior. With our level of consistency, we may not be at our best, but we are closer. The majority of them didn’t occur in the games we’ve won before.

“You can’t play in the short spaces the way we played without the ball. Everyone who had the ball was shrewd and incredibly swift. Everybody is connected.

If you are not connected defensively, you cannot be quick, wise, and good. Here, Ipswich defeated Chelsea, and Liam [Delap] is an outstanding scorer.
