Georgia football needs to earn more respect from the College Football Playoff committee.
Georgia football has entered the home stretch of their season now that SEC play is complete. The Bulldogs have two games remaining in the regular season to try and impress the College Football Playoff committee, so they need to use every opportunity in front of them to try and improve the committee’s perception of them.
Georgia came in as the committee’s No. 10 team in the country this week, which is a two spot improvement from the week before. But there is still plenty of work to do before Georgia is officially included in the 12-team playoff.
So what needs to happen this weekend for the committee’s perception of Kirby Smart and this Georgia team to improve?
1. Dominate UMass
Georgia is a massive 42-point favorite over UMass this weekend. So it goes without saying that UGA needs to beat UMass by that margin, if not more, if they want to impress anyone this weekend.
Even a 30-point win against UMass this weekend wouldn’t even raise any eyebrows from around the country.
Just look at what happened last weekend with Alabama. The Tide beat Mercer by 45 points, which was good enough for the committee to move them up three spots in this week’s rankings. Keep in mind that Georgia only moved up two spots after beating a top 10 Tennessee team by 14 points. So the committee has shown that a blowout win against a terrible team is good enough to significantly move up in their rankings.
The last thing Georgia needs is for UMass to push them in this game. Georgia can’t allow UMass to still be in this game at halftime. The Bulldogs have to blow them out from the moment the game begins, that way the committee can’t point to their struggles against a team like UMass as a way to justify their current ranking for Georgia.
