Mikel Arteta has now hand-picked his ideal Edu replacement, it reveals one important change at Arsenal

Edu Gaspar’s recent resignation as sporting director will have enormous ramifications at Arsenal.

Edu Gaspar played a crucial role within the Arsenal hierarchy, spearheading the club’s plans and actions in the transfer market.

The Brazilian worked closely with Mikel Arteta to build the squad that has now made the Gunners genuine contenders for the Premier League title again.

Edu’s exit came as a shock to the Arsenal leadership, and the club are now working to secure his replacement.

Arsenal approach Luis Campos to replace Edu Gaspar

Arteta paid an emotional tribute to Edu after his departure was confirmed, and also discussed how the club would go about seeking his successor.

The North London outfit have now identified who they wish to see take up the former midfielder’s stead.

Luis Campos has been linked with the vacancy left by Edu. Now, according to Football Transfers, the Gunners have “approached” the Portuguese executive to discuss him joining the club.

Campos is currently employed as an advisor by PSG, with his contract with them set to expire at the end of this season. Whilst the French giants are keen to keep the 60-year-old on board, they are yet to reach an agreement over an extension.

As per the aforementioned report: “Arsenal’s interest has been driven by manager Mikel Arteta, who will be key to the appointment of Edu’s successor.”

Having been hand-picked by Arteta may sway Campos towards making the move to the Emirates Stadium, rather than extending his stay in Paris.

Mikel Arteta is now more powerful than ever at Arsenal

Edu was a close ally to Arteta at Arsenal, even helping to protect the Spanish coach’s job when he came under pressure earlier in his tenure.

Given this bond between the pair, Edu’s exit might have weakened the manager’s position, especially as there are already some concerns about how much power Arteta wields at Arsenal.

However, the sporting director’s departure appears to have had the opposite effect. There has been a power shift at Arsenal, in Arteta’s favour. The fact that the former midfielder has been given the freedom to direct the recruitment drive for Edu’s replacement proves this.

Typically, a sporting director is appointed with a more long-term strategy in mind than when a manager is brought on board, such is the nature of modern football. However, Arteta is now so established at Arsenal that this system has been flipped on its head. The Spaniard is calling the shots across the board, it would seem.
