Leicester City’s Championship-winning defender Callum Doyle has returned to the second tier, joining Norwich on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Doyle played 17 games as City clinched promotion last season and would likely have played more if not for a serious knee injury. But while City have stepped up to the Premier League, the 20-year-old is remaining in the Championship for now.

He’ll again be aiming for promotion though. Norwich finished in the play-offs last season, where they were dumped out by Leeds in the semi-finals, and they will hope to contend at the top of the table again under new manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Adept at centre-back and left-back, and a key player in Enzo Maresca’s system thanks to his excellent ability on the ball, Doyle played every minute in league and cup for City until sustaining the injury in late September. Surgery kept him out until January, with James Justin establishing himself in the team in the mean-time, restricting Doyle’s appearances when he returned.

Joining the Canaries after featuring on Man City’s pre-season tour to the US, Doyle said: “I’m very excited and glad that it’s finally done. I feel really grateful to be here and can’t wait to get started. I think we can have a really good season here.”

Norwich’s sporting director Ben Knapper added: “Callum is a player we’ve wanted to bring to the club for some time, and I’m so happy that our patience has been rewarded. We feel he’s a great fit for how we want to play, and he brings with him some fantastic experience at this level for someone who’s still just 20. His pedigree is there for all to see and he’ll be an important player for us this season.”
